Zion Williamson, Ja Morant Expected To Sign Max Extensions When Free Agency Opens

Jun 12, 2022 10:14 AM

Speaking before Game 4 of the 2022 NBA Finals, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that both Zion Williamson and Ja Morant are expected to "quickly sign max extensions" when free agency opens in July. Williamson and Morant were the top two picks in the 2019 NBA Draft and are extension-eligible for the first time this summer.

New Orleans VP of basketball operations David Griffin recently said that it was an "easy decision" to offer Williamson a full max extension of five years and $186 million. Griffin did say that the Pelicans may look to add some protections to the deal. This is in case Williamson suffers any sort of re-injury during the life of the extension.

By virtue of making All-NBA in 2022, Morant may sign a designated player extension. He's eligible for the same deal as Williamson, but Morant could add designated player language that elevates his total deal to $223 million, should he make All-NBA again or win MVP.

Zion Williamson on New Orleans: I Do Want To Be Here

Jun 11, 2022 5:08 PM

Zion Williamson made some of his first public comments to the media in a long time on Saturday while at a youth basketball event. The most important thing Williamson said related to his future with the New Orleans Pelicans, when he was asked about holding the camp in New Orleans.

"I do want to be here. That's no secret. I feel like I've stood on that when I spoke," Williamson said. "Currently, this does not really have anything to do with that. This is just me wanting to be a pillar in my community."

Williamson admitted that it had been a long year for him, as he spent the entire season rehabbing from a broken foot suffered in the summer of 2021. Williamson said his focus is now on working out with various Pelicans teammates that are in town during the offseason.

When asked about signing a potential extension with New Orleans, Williamson played coy while flashing a big smile, before saying, "You have to ask the Pels, baby."

Brandon Ingram Had Successful Surgery On Right Pinky Finger

Jun 10, 2022 5:16 PM

New Orleans Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram underwent successful surgery on his right pinky to address a flexion contracture. Ingram is expected to need approximately six-to-eight weeks for recovery.

A flexion contracture is generally an injury or condition which results in an inability to fully straighten the injured part of the body. This can occur through contact, overuse or genetically.

If Ingram is recovered in the timeline given, he'll be healthy well in advance of training camp. Training camp will start in late-September or early-October.

David Griffin: Offering Zion Williamson Max Extension Is 'Pretty Easy Decision'

Jun 9, 2022 10:49 PM

New Orleans Pelicans vice president of basketball operations David Griffin described Zion Williamson as a historic player, adding that offering Williamson a max contract is an "easy decision."

"It's not a big decision, it's a pretty easy decision," said Griffin during an appearance on The Ryen Russillo Podcast. "The kid's historically good when he plays ... this is a max player."

Williamson is eligible to sign a five-year, $181 million rookie extension this summer.

Griffin did add that the Pelicans would need to protect themselves in case of injury.

Williamson has played just 85 games over his first three seasons.

"What becomes significant as a team that's a small-market team and as a team that can't make mistakes in terms of injuries over time, you have to indemnify yourself in some way for that and that's fine. But the decision of whether or not this is a max player is an easy one," added Griffin.

Griffin also said that he believes Williamson is committed to the Pelicans.

Williamson expressed his desire to be with the Pelicans last month.
