Thunder Considering Changes To Starting Lineup For Game 3

May 24, 2014 1:43 PM

Scott Brooks admitted on Saturday that he is considering changes to the Oklahoma City Thunder's lineup ahead of Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals on Sunday.

"We've made changes before," Brooks said. "We have time to think about that."

Serge Ibaka could be available for Game 3, which would move him into the starting lineup. Other possible changes could include Caron Butler being inserted to the starting five, as Brooks did late in the Thunder's first round series against Memphis.

Ibaka remains day-to-day and the Thunder said he did not participate in practice on Saturday.

Serge Ibaka Progresses Rapidly, Upgraded To Day-To-Day

May 23, 2014 12:54 PM

Serge Ibaka has made significant progress in his return from his calf injury and has been upgraded to day-to-day.

The Oklahoma City Thunder had previously ruled out Ibaka for the remainder of the postseason.

The San Antonio Spurs have raced out to a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals with the absence of Ibaka being dully felt.

Ibaka is one of the best defensive big men in the NBA and his ability to stretch the floor has also limited the Thunder on offense without him.

Serge Ibaka Retains Hope Of Returning If Thunder Advance

May 20, 2014 10:54 AM

The Oklahoma City Thunder have ruled out Serge Ibaka for the remainder of the postseason with a lower leg injury, but he still hopes to work toward a return.

Ibaka has a willingness to play with pain and is thinking about beginning some stationary shooting late this week.

"He's not coming through those doors. … He's not coming back," said Scott Brooks after Game 1.

Ibaka wouldn't be able to return for the Western Conference Finals, but nobody has talked him out of hoping to return for the NBA Finals if the Thunder advance.

The Thunder believed this injury would be a one-to-two-month recovery period.

Jackson Waiting On Coach Search To Seriously Discuss Job With Fisher

May 19, 2014 12:04 AM

Phil Jackson is in no rush to hire a head coach for the New York Knicks until he has the opportunity to seriously discuss the opportunity with Derek Fisher.

Fisher is still in the playoffs with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Fisher's interest in coaching remains a matter of debate, with Scott Brooks telling the New York Daily News over the weekend that it wouldn't surprise him if he played one more season.

The Knicks are also interested in Brian Shaw, but they do not plan on asking permission to interview him.

Serge Ibaka Out For Rest Of Playoffs With Calf Injury

May 16, 2014 6:14 PM

Serge Ibaka is expected to miss the remainder of the postseason with a left calf injury.

Ibaka sustained the injury in Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals.

“We are obviously disappointed for Serge, as he is a tremendous competitor, and we know how badly he wants to be on the court with his teammates,” said Sam Presti. “At this point it is important that our team directs its concentration and energy towards preparation and execution for our upcoming series. As with all teams, our group has confronted different challenges. It is our collective experience that we will call on to ensure that we play to our capabilities.”

The Thunder will likely give more minutes to Steven Adams and Nick Collison, who played well in place of Ibaka on Thursday.

Oklahoma City lost Russell Westbrook during last season's playoffs.

Thunder Find Effective Lineup With Collison-Adams Combo

May 16, 2014 1:28 PM

Scott Brooks stumbled across an effective lineup in their Game 6 win with Nick Collison and Steven Adams playing in the frontcourt with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Reggie Jackson.

The five-man unit played six minutes together during the regular season and seven minutes in the playoffs.

Over the next 15 minutes in the second half of Game 6, the Oklahoma City Thunder scored 42 points while allowing just 24.

Neither Collison nor Adams are particularly good offensive players, but both are good offensive rebounders and can also set screens and roll hard to the bucket to allow the Thunder to spread the defense even without a stretch-big.

Durant's highest true shooting percentage this season has been with the Collison-Adams pairing.

Rivers Yells At Bennett Before Blasting Call To Media

May 14, 2014 10:25 AM

Before Doc Rivers addressed the media following the Los Angeles Clippers' 105-104 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, he came across Clay Bennett.

"Wow!" Rivers yelled at Bennett. "Why can't we get the right replay?"

Bennett didn't say a word in response and kept walking past Rivers.

Rivers was still upset about an out-of-bounds call that clearly last touched Reggie Jackson.

"It was our ball," Rivers said. "Everybody knows that it was our ball. I think the bottom line they thought it was a foul and they made up for it. In my opinion, let's take away replay. Let's take away the replay system because that's our ball. We win the game and we got robbed because of that play.

"It's clear. Everybody in the arena saw it. That is why everybody was shocked when they said Oklahoma City [ball]. That was our ball."

Said Rivers: "That could be a series-defining call, and that's not right."

According to NBA official rule No. 8, Section 11, "If a player has his hand in contact with the ball and an opponent hits the hand causing the ball to go out-of-bounds, the team whose player had his hand on the ball retains possession." In a statement after the game, Brothers – the crew chief – said the referees determined the replay was "inconclusive."

"We saw two replays," Brothers said. "The two replays we saw were from the overhead camera showing down, and the one from under the basket showing the same angle but a different view. And from those two replays, it was inconclusive as to whom the ball went out of bounds off of. When it's inconclusive, we have to go with the call that's on the floor."

Greivis Vasquez: Durant Will Have Statues Outside ACC

May 13, 2014 6:49 PM

Greivis Vasquez was teammates with Kevin Durant in high school at Montrose Christian in Maryland.

"Hopefully I get to play with him one day in the NBA and hopefully it's here in Toronto," said Vasquez on Toronto radio on Monday.

Durant is a free agent in 2016 and he grew up a fan of the Toronto Raptors during the Vince Carter era.

Vasquez, who is a free agent this offseason, talked about Durant again on Tuesday with Bryan Hayes of TSN 1050.

Hayes: "It was announced 'Raptors Day' on Monday here in Toronto, and you guys just got to the first round. What do you think the city would be like if you ever won a title here?"

Vasquez: "Well, imagine if we get KD, Kevin Durant, 2016."

Hayes: "That's your guy, too, right?"

Vasquez: "And he'll lead us to a championship."

Hayes: "Are you calling your shot right now, Kevin Durant coming to Toronto?"

Vasquez: "I think he'll have statues right outside the ACC."

Hayes: "And where's your statue going to be?"

Vasquez: "It's OK. It could be back in the locker room, it could be in Venezuela. As long as I win a championship with KD, that'll be an amazing feeling. So hopefully that happens."

Vasquez spoke glowingly about Toronto during his exit interview following the Raptors' season.

Steven Adams Expected To Become Rugby Player, Instead Becomes An NBA Agitator

May 9, 2014 5:21 PM

Steven Adams has become one of the NBA's most infamous agitators in his rookie season.

Adams was the 12th overall selection in the 2013 NBA Draft out of Pittsburgh by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Adams grew up in New Zealand and was an unknown basketball talent until Ken McFadden discovered him and told Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon about him.

“I just played it by ear,” said Adams, 20. “I played basketball seriously at 13, but I didn’t know where it would take me. I thought I’d be a rugby player. It turns out I’m not. “

Dixon jokes that he recruited Adams for five years and had him for five months, but it took others, like McFadden, to convince Adams that in an outdoors-oriented country, sports could be something more than a weekend activity.

“A kid in New Zealand doesn’t see athletics as a way to an education and financial riches,” Dixon said. “The All Blacks can make some money, but not the money we think of here when you reach the pinnacle.”

Adams was punched in the jaw by Zach Randolph in Game 6 of the first round, leading to a suspension for the Memphis Grizzlies' power forward.

“Red Auerbach always told me you need to get agitators,” Doc Rivers said. “He’s one of those for sure.”

Adams is called Tarzan by some of his teammates.

“When you play hard, a lot of guys don’t want you to play hard,” Scott Brooks said. “This is a competition, so you have to be ready to play against Steven Adams because he’s going to give you everything he has.”
