The Phoenix Suns signed rookie free agent Anthony Lever-Pedroza to a contract Friday, completing their 15-man roster for training camp.

Lever-Pedroza, the son of former Arizona State and NBA star Lafayette "Fat" Lever, has played two professional seasons in Mexico and averaged 9.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in four games for the Mexican National Team at the FIBA Americas Championship from Aug. 24-Sept. 4.

He also played for Sacramento's summer league team this year.

A native of Tucson, Lever-Pedroza played three years of college ball at Oregon, setting the school season record for three-point accuracy with 50 percent (53-of-106) in 2001-02.

The Clippers agreed to terms with veteran free-agent forward Walter McCarty on Thursday.

Marion Anticipates Small-Forward Time

Sep 24, 2005 11:18 PM

Barely sweating, Shawn Marion rebounded, led the break and slipped a bounce pass between two defenders for a teammate's easy layup.

Marion looked as if he stepped straight out of May's playoff games when he joined the Suns' voluntary workouts Friday at America West Arena. His return seemed seamless, but Marion said he felt out of shape and hardly knew anybody in the pickup games.

Welcome to a team with nine new faces.

"There's going to be a little bit of change out there on the floor because our lineup's different, but hopefully we're still going to be running and gunning," Marion said.

The addition of Kurt Thomas allows Marion to return to a swingman role to start games, although Phoenix likely will still employ its quick look often with Marion and Amar? Stoudemire at the posts.

"I'm a three (small forward)," Marion said. "I'm not a four (power forward). Definitely, it's going to help. I can play anywhere. It's just a matter of how we're going to use me. We can go out there with any lineup, and I'm going to try to do it in some kind of way."

Stoudemire Says Extension Should Be Done Soon

Sep 23, 2005 9:14 AM

Back in the Valley working out to prepare for the season, Amar? Stoudemire said he will sign a five-year, $72.6 million contract extension with the Phoenix Suns before the team begins training camp on Oct. 4.

?The Suns deal should be done here pretty soon,'' Stoudemire said. ?We're just going over the paperwork and we should finish it here shortly.''

Stoudemire's deal will look very much like the maximum extension signed by Houston center Yao Ming ? the No. 1 pick of the 2002 NBA draft ? this summer. After making $2.59 million this season and completing his rookie contract, Stoudemire's contract will soar to $12 million in 2006-07 and he will earn an annual raise of $1.26 million ? the maximum allowed by the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement ? in each of the next four seasons, ending with a $17.04 million deal in 2010-11.

It was not immediately known if the new deal has an ?out-clause'' that would allow Stoudemire to void the deal after three seasons (following the 2008-09 season), but Suns chairman Jerry Colangelo has said most maximum contract extensions do include such clauses.

Stoudemire said he is pleased with the changes the Suns have made in the offseason, and that the additions would make up for the losses of major contributors like Joe Johnson, Quentin Richardson and Steven Hunter,

?I'm very impressed with guys like Kurt Thomas, Brian Grant and Raja Bell and the other additions,'' he said. ?I think we can be better. We'll be much better defensively, and we still have our offensive game. I've been working on my perimeter game, trying to become an all-around basketball player. That's my goal.''

Stoudemire Remains With Nike

Sep 23, 2005 5:50 AM

A bigger team beat Phoenix to an extension with Amar? Stoudemire - team Nike.

Stoudemire is closing in on signing a contract extension with the Suns next week, but he finished an extension deal with the world's athletic shoe giant. Stoudemire signed a six-year extension with Nike this month.

The new deal, which takes effect Oct. 1, eventually will include a signature shoe, but Stoudemire will pitch the Nike Force model for now. Financial terms were not disclosed, but it is believed to be the largest shoe deal an NBA big man has received.

"That's huge," Stoudemire said. "It's something I always dreamed of. It was one of my goals to sign and be with an elite company. I'm looking forward to selling apparel and product and make both parties happy.

"It's mainly the respect level from the company to believe I can sell apparel and give me a signature shoe. Having a signature shoe is great. Kids can say, 'I want to get the Amar? Stoudemire shoe.' That makes me feel real blessed."

Suns Go 'Hollywood' With Pricey Courtside Seats

Sep 21, 2005 2:01 AM

Capitalizing on the success of last season's NBA title run, the Suns have gone Hollywood.

Prices for their 16 new "Jack Nicholson" courtside seats are $1,500 per game -- nearly three times the price of last year's most expensive ticket and in the NBA penthouse for premium courtside seating.

But don't bother breaking out your credit card. All of the seats are sold for the upcoming season that begins Nov. 1.

Sarver Says New Suns Will Score Even More

Sep 15, 2005 7:31 AM

Welcomed by 300 familiar foam "No. 1" fingers, Suns managing partner Robert Sarver shared a tenet of his corporate experience Wednesday.

"In business, people wait until the story's finished and then judge whether it's good or bad," Sarver told Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale board members, donors, employees and volunteers.

He would like fans and followers to adhere to that in the case of his Suns. That is not the way of pro fans or media, particularly after a tumultuous summer that saw Joe Johnson's odd departure and the addition of nine players.

Even Sarver and the basketball staff already have proclaimed the Suns to be better. Phoenix addressed defensive and rebounding deficiencies with Kurt Thomas, Raja Bell and Brian Grant while becoming deeper with versatile additions like James Jones, Boris Diaw and Eddie House.

Sarver said the staff expects the Suns can average three points more than last season, when they averaged a league-best 110.4 points. The last NBA team to average 113.4 points is also the last Suns team to reach the NBA Finals (in 1993).
