Wells sits with a concussion

Dec 31, 2003 9:03 AM

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Bonzi Wells missed Memphis' game against Seattle on Tuesday night with a concussion he received in the Grizzlies' previous game.

Wells was knocked woozy during a collision in the fourth quarter of a 94-86 loss at Indiana on Monday.

Memphis coach Hubie Brown said Wells was still having headaches on Tuesday, but hoped the shooting guard would be back by Friday's home game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

``He's really a major addition. He's playing extremely well, blending into the chemistry. We're learning where to play him and how to play him,'' Brown said.

Wells was acquired Dec. 3 in a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers. In 14 games with the Grizzlies, he has averaged 14.3 points per game.

Memphis also activated forward Dahntay Jones and put guard Troy Bell on the injured list.

Grizzlies activate Troy Bell

Dec 10, 2003 11:00 PM

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies activated rookie guard Troy Bell before Wednesday night's game against the Atlanta Hawks.

Bell, the 16th overall pick out of Boston College, has not seen action this season for Memphis. He was active for the first five games but did not play. He was placed on the injured list with left knee tendinitis Nov. 8.

To make room for Bell, Memphis placed swingman Dahntay Jones on the injured list with left Achilles tendinitis. Jones, a rookie from Duke, had played in four games after starting the season on the injured list with a left ankle sprain. He is averaging 1.8 points, his most extensive action coming when he played 15 minutes against New Jersey on Dec. 3, scoring seven points.

Memphis obtained Bell and Jones from the Boston Celtics in a draft night trade that sent the Celtics the rights to Marcus Banks and Kendrick Perkins.

Success on road gives Grizzlies best start ever

Dec 4, 2003 11:00 PM

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies, never known for great success on the road, are off to their best start ever.

And most of the wins have come away from home.

The difference this season is a new confidence and a determination to play hard until the game ends, Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said.

``Once you start winning close games, you get to the point that you expect to win the games and you expect to make the plays,'' Brown said Thursday. ``Also, we have guys who are making plays.''

The Grizzlies had only eight road victories each of the past three seasons. With a 6-5 record on the road so far, Memphis is 9-8 overall, the first time in franchise history it has been over .500 in December.

The Grizzlies beat the New Jersey Nets 96-93 Wednesday for their third straight road victory.

Grizzlies president Jerry West said the players understand what Brown expects of them and ``have bought into his philosophy.''

Brown joined the Grizzlies in November 2002, returning to coaching after a 16-year break spent primarily as a television analyst.

``There's an awful lot of pride in playing this game,'' West said, ``and obviously the coaching staff has instilled that pride.''

West said he was pleased with the Grizzlies' performance so far but expects more.

``We're going to have win games at home now,'' West said. ``We're going to have to protect our home court.''

The Grizzlies, who host Washington on Friday, have lost three games at home.

West attended Thursday's practice to welcome Bonzi Wells, who was acquired in a trade with Portland on Wednesday. Wells had clashes with fans, teammates and coaches in Portland.

Brown, who is described by Memphis players as tough but fair, said he was not concerned about Wells' reputation.

``We never judge people before they come here and play for us,'' Brown said. ``We start from Day One: These are the rules. Either you abide by the rules or you sit down.''

Brown has championed that approach since joining the Grizzlies and is credited with helping improve the performance of players like point guard Jason Williams. Williams, who is now a team leader, was known for flashy but unpredictable play at Sacramento before joining Memphis in 2001.

``You allow a player to make the decision whether he wants to accept what you're dealing out,'' Brown said. ``This is a team game and he's got to accept that ... and if he doesn't, he's an underachiever no matter what his talent level is.''

Memphis began a three-game road trip Nov. 21 with a 98-97 victory over the SuperSonics for its first win in Seattle in 16 tries. But two blowout losses quickly followed, a 121-98 defeat at Los Angeles and a 109-89 loss at Sacramento.

The latest road trip was a different story.

Before the win at New Jersey, the Grizzlies beat Cleveland 122-115 in double overtime on Nov. 29, and beat Boston 96-89 on Monday.

They also have won on the road against Houston and Orlando, while also losing to Portland, Phoenix and Utah.

The Grizzlies, founded in Vancouver in 1995, had their best record on the road in 1999-2000, when they won 10.

``We've executed well in the last six minutes of road games,'' Brown said, ``whereas a year a go we might not have been able to do that.''

Wednesday's NBA Capsules

Dec 4, 2003 2:00 AM

TORONTO (AP) Donyell Marshall and Vince Carter each scored 21 points and the new-look Toronto Raptors set a franchise record with 17 3-pointers in a 105-95 victory over the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.

Alvin Williams added 18 points and Chris Bosh had 16 for the Raptors, who reached a season-high in points.

The Raptors went 17-for-24 from behind the arc, breaking their record of 15 3-pointers on Nov. 10, 2001 at Utah.

Toronto, averaging a league-low 79 points per game, improved to 2-0 since acquiring Marshall, Jalen Rose and Lonny Baxter from Chicago for Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams and Chris Jefferies. Paul Pierce had 23 points for the Celtics, who have lost three straight and seven of nine.

Pistons 87, Heat 73

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) Mehmet Okur had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Ben Wallace added 10 points and a season-high 21 rebounds.

Okur started in place of Elden Campbell, who was excused to attend a family funeral. Detroit won its fourth straight and sent the Heat to their fifth straight road loss.

Richard Hamilton had 18 points for Detroit, which had all five starters in double figures. Miami's Lamar Odom led all scorers with 22, but made just 11 of a career-high 31 field-goal attempts.

Wallace had 20 rebounds in a game for the first time this season after doing it 16 times last year. Wallace (six) and Okur (five) also combined to block 11 shots.

Grizzlies 96, Nets 93

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) James Posey and Pau Gasol scored 19 points apiece and the surprising Memphis Grizzlies took advantage of three mistakes by Jason Kidd down the stretch.

Lorenzen Wright added 14 points as Grizzlies won their third straight on the road and handed the Nets their fourth straight loss overall and their sixth in eight home games.

With a record of 9-8, this is the latest in a season the Grizzlies have been over .500.

The Grizzlies played their second straight game without point guard Jason Williams, who is sidelined with back spasms. They also were without Bonzi Wells, who was acquired in a trade from Portland earlier in the day.

Wells traded to Memphis for Person, draft pick

Dec 3, 2003 8:00 PM

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Volatile forward Bonzi Wells was traded by the Portland Trail Blazers to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday for guard Wesley Person and a conditional 2004 first-round draft pick.

Wells, averaging 12.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists, was stripped of his co-captaincy and suspended two games earlier this season for cursing at coach Maurice Cheeks.

Wells also was fined last month for making an obscene gesture at a fan after a loss to Philadelphia. Last March, Wells was suspended one game for conduct considered detrimental to the team.

``We are very hopeful that this opportunity provides a fresh start for Bonzi in Memphis, and that he enjoys joining a rising young team in the Grizzlies,'' Memphis president Jerry West said. ``We're very optimistic Bonzi will provide a significant presence in our lineup.''

Portland gets Person, who has averaged 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists in his 10-year career. With his role limited this season, Wells was averaging only 5.2 points.

If the Grizzlies' first-round pick next June is among the top three selections, they will keep it and give the Trail Blazers their top pick in 2005 _ provided it is not the overall No. 1 pick. If the selection rolls over to 2006, Portland will get it unconditionally.

Portland entered Wednesday night's home game against the Indiana Pacers with an 8-7 record, tied for fourth place in the Pacific Division.

Memphis, 8-8 going into its game against the New Jersey Nets, is last in the Midwest Division.

The trade comes as the Blazers try to repair an image tarnished by several player arrests and team infighting. the latest instance coming Tuesday when forward Zach Randolph was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of marijuana.

It is hoped Person will provide some of the veteran leadership the team lost when Scottie Pippen left for the Chicago Bulls as a free agent in the offseason.

Wells was in his sixth season with the Blazers and has a year left on his contract, plus a team option for another year. Person is in the final season of his contract.

He has at times showed flashes of brilliance, including a 45-point performance in Game 2 of the team's first-round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks last season. But Wells also developed a troubled reputation.

He was suspended early last season by the league for spitting on San Antonio forward Danny Ferry, then was suspended for two games for his role in a postgame scuffle with the Golden State Warriors.

``We are happy to be getting a quality player and individual in Wesley Person, a veteran who can help provide leadership on the court and in the locker room, as well as a draft pick which will help the organization in the future,'' Blazers general manager John Nash said.
