Mavericks Expected To Be Patient In Offseason, Wait For 2021

Aug 31, 2020 5:08 PM

The Dallas Mavericks are unlikely to make major changes this offseason as they keep their salary cap space maximized for 2021, according to sources that spoke with Tim MacMahon of ESPN.

That line of thinking will especially be the case if Tim Hardaway Jr. picks up his $19 million player option as anticipated.

The Mavericks ranked 18th in the NBA in defensive efficiency during the season and that will need to balance out with their excellent offense to take the next step.

"My goal at the start of every season is to win a championship," Luka Doncic, who won titles with Real Madrid and the Slovenian national team, said Sunday. "There's no other hope."

Pacers Believe Victor Oladipo Wants To Remain With Franchise

Aug 31, 2020 5:11 PM

Victor Oladipo will be an unrestricted free agent in 2021 and his future with the Indiana Pacers is uncertain. Oladipo and the Pacers briefly discussed a contract extension before the start of the 19-20 season.

"My goal is to have a direct relationship with Victor," said Kevin Pritchard. "Sometimes you have to just sit in front of someone, have a conversation, ask the tough questions, be open and honest. I have not heard anything other than he wants to be here."

J. Michael of the Indianapolis Star, however, indicates Oladipo "has been leaning the other way (leaving the Pacers) since July. Who knows what happens/changes btw then vs now."

Oladipo was an All-Star in 2018 and 2019 before suffering a ruptured quad tendon in his right knee in January 2019.

Pritchard continues to like the backcourt combination of Oladipo and Malcolm Brogdon.

"When you look at it on paper, it fits," said Pritchard  "You have two attacking guards who both can make plays for other people. ... We put a lot of load on Malcolm this year. His usage rates were (off) the chart."

Spurs Remain 'Under The Assumption' Gregg Popovich Will Remain As Head Coach

Aug 31, 2020 1:58 PM

Gregg Popovich has been linked to the Brooklyn Nets' head coaching vacancy for the past few weeks and there hasn't been an outright statement refuting the possibility he would consider leaving the San Antonio Spurs.

When asked about the future of Popovich by CNBC's Jabari Young, R.C. Buford said the Spurs are “under the assumption” Popovich is returning.

“I don’t know if he’s told Brian (Wright) any differently,” Buford said. “Pop’s shown nothing other than how we’re going to build our team for next year.”

But Buford added: “Pop’s vision will be in play long after his presence. That doesn’t mean it’ll be him in there making those decisions, but we’ve all learned together, and you’re not going to step away from a values-based, team-building aspect that focuses on culture and coming to work every day and working on it.”
