Grizzlies Seek Bonuses Attached To Rookie Contract

Aug 17, 2010 10:11 PM

Xavier Henry is currently in a contract stalemate with the Grizzlies.

Arn Tellem, agent for Henry, says the Grizzlies are trying to make his client meet performance bonuses, such as making the rookie challenge at All-Star weekend or being named to one of the all-rookie teams. He says only one player out of more than 450 since the rookie salary scale was instituted in 1995 has agreed to a performance bonus.

"Basic fairness and equality are fundamental aspects of every positive organization-player relationship, and those concepts are totally absent from the Grizzlies' current proposal to Xavier," Tellem said.

Tellem said Henry would agree to bonuses that are frequently offered to reach the full 120 percent, such as taking part in conditioning programs or playing in the summer league, but said no other team in this draft had asked a player to accept a performance incentive.

New NCAA President Likes MLB-Style Draft For NBA

Aug 17, 2010 4:01 PM

NCAA president Dr. Mark Emmert says he's interested in a baseball-style rule that would allow college basketball players to either enter the NBA draft out of high school, or commit to college for a set period of time.

Emmert, speaking with Mitch Levy on Seattle radio station KJR on Tuesday, said he would "persuasively" discuss the matter with NBA officials.

Any change in the NBA's draft rules would have to be part of a new collective bargaining agreement between its players and the league.

"I much prefer the baseball model, for example, that allows a young person if they want to go play professional baseball, they can do it right out of high school, but once they start college they've got to play for three years or until they're 21," said Emmert. "I like that a good deal.

"But what you have to also recognize is that rule isn't an NCAA rule. That's a rule of the NBA. And it's not the NBA itself, but the NBA Players Association. So to change that rule will require me and others working with the NBA, working with the players association."

With Eye On Future, Cavs Stockpiling Picks

Aug 3, 2010 7:49 AM

The Cavaliers are saying publicly that they want to compete for a playoff spot this coming season, but behind the scenes they are clearly in rebuilding mode.

Cleveland general manager Chris Grant is stockpiling draft picks, having acquired two first-round picks and three second-rounders since the start of free agency.

They are also trying to get younger, which is one reason why re-signing Shaquille O'Neal appears to be out of the question.

LeBron, Firm Recruiting Players Before Agents Allowed?

Aug 2, 2010 12:48 PM

Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that LeBron James and his firm LRMR enjoy direct and open access to prospects at the high school and college levels.

James is permitted to hold camps with prospects who will become pros within a year while at the same time essentially recruiting them to sign with his firm.

At James' Nike camp in Akron in July, all the top high school players and college standouts were present but it seemed agents were not allowed in the building.

Maverick Carter, James' best friend who is the CEO of LRMR, was in attendance.  James gave the players free shoes and met their families.
