Butler Goes Small To Combat Against Youngstown State's 3-Point Barrage

Jan 10, 2011 2:04 PM

Youngstown State shot 58.3% from beyond the arc, but still lost 84-79 to Butler on Sunday. The Penguins made a school record 14 3-pointers with Blake Allen, Ashen Ward and Devonte Maymon each hitting at least three.

Butler went to a small lineup to combat Youngstown State's perimeter game, benching 6-11 Andrew Smith, after falling behind 61-53.

Coach Brad Stevens said the Bulldogs rarely practice with such a lineup.

Not in 190 games had Butler won when allowing as many as 79 points over 40 minutes. That was nearly six years ago.

"They're a really good defensive team," Youngstown coach Jerry Slocum said, "and I think when the ball keeps on moving, you eventually kind of get them to over-help at times."

"I know this sounds crazy: We needed to win a game like that," Stevens said, "when everything seems to be going against you, and you just kind of find a way, grit your teeth."

Butler Gaining Little National Attention

Jan 8, 2011 12:41 PM

The Bulldogs remain a target in the Horizon League, but they have received little national attention this season.

Butler has an overall mark of 11-5, including seven wins in eight games, and an RPI rank in the Top 30.

"One of the things that I kind of felt: We got to the Sweet 16 last year and nobody cared," coach Brad Stevens said. "The first time we got to the Sweet 16, we came back and Hinkle was rocking. Now, when we got to the Final Four it was nuts. But I think that's just part of the progression of the program, and that's why it's so hard to maintain. People are shooting for you. People are gunning for you."

As a mid-major, the Bulldogs have their mistakes multiplied and accomplishments diminished.

Butler Makes Statement Against Cleveland State

Jan 8, 2011 12:33 PM

Butler made a statement by routing Horizon League rival Cleveland State on Friday night.

The Bulldogs built a 20-point lead early and cruized to a 79-56 victory.

"We weren't in this game after the 10-minute mark," CSU coach Gary Waters said.

It was Cleveland State's first loss in conference play this season.

"We tried to be active, pay their guards a lot of attention, get the ball out of their hands as much as possible" Butler coach Brad Stevens said.
