John Calipari and Thad Matta know the perks and perils involved with recruiting one-and-done players.

Matta has coached five “one-and-dones,” while Calipari starting point guards the past three seasons — Derrick Rose in 2008 and Tyreke Evans in 2009 at Memphis and John Wall last season at Kentucky declared for the draft after one season in college.

Both coaches look for a specific type of player.

“Where I’m at, I want guys that appreciate the university, I want guys that are going to have both feet in for the time that they’re with us,” Matta said. “If it becomes a distraction, that’s when it becomes problematic, when guys are thinking about the next step. That makes it extremely challenging for a coach, there’s no question about it, and a team.”
