Twins agree with Thome

The Twins have agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with slugger Jim Thome, a person familiar with the negotiations said today, adding that the deal includes up to $700,00 in incentives.

Thome, 39, has hit 564 career home runs, but the Twins signed him to bolster their bench. They already have Jason Kubel as a left-handed hitting DH.

Normally I can't stand it when the Twins sign these aged free agents. But I like this signing. I don't expect him to contribute a lot, but he is a good bat to bring off the bench. And on days where the Twins are facing a dominate right hander they can put Delmon on the bench, Kubel in the outfield, and DH Thome.

That was my first thought too, but at least hes cheap....

Between Mauer, Morneau, Thome, Kubel lots of balls will end up on the plaza

Isn't he supposed to mainly a pinch hitter? Most of the lefties in our lineup are guys you wouldn't pinch hit for anyway.

Yes, he will be. (And for the record he has stated he is fine with that role.)

My guess for the lineup..

CF Span
SS Hardy
C Mauer
1B Morneau
DH Kubel
RF Cuddyer
LF Young
3B Harris
2B Punto
