Celtics Sign Xavier Silas To 10-Day Contract With Hardship Spot

Mar 28, 2018 2:45 PM

The Boston Celtics have signed Xavier Silas to a 10-day contract.

Silas (6-5, 205 lbs.) is returning to the NBA scene after previously participating in two games for the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2011-12 season, where he tallied 11 points and hauled in four rebounds.

Most recently, the San Antonio, TX native has spent parts of five seasons in the NBA Gatorade League from 2011-12 to 2017-18, averaging 14.8 points (42.2% FG, 37.3% 3-PT, 86.0% FT), 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 30.1 minutes in 183 career games (92 starts) between Maine, Bakersfield and Northern Arizona.

Silas is coming to the Celtics from Northern Arizona, where he averaged 18.4 points (43.8% FG, 38.1% 3-PT, 88.2% FT), 4.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.21 steals in 43 games this season.

The Celtics were able to sign Silas after the league granted the team a hardship roster spot, following injuries to other Celtics players.

Kyrie Irving Out 3-6 Weeks After Surgery On Left Knee

Mar 24, 2018 10:43 PM

Kyrie Irving will miss three to six weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a tension wire in his left knee.

Irving could return as early as Boston's first round series.

"The wire was originally placed as part of the surgical repair of a fractured patella sustained during the 2015 NBA Finals," the Celtics said in a release. "While removal of the wire should relieve irritation it was causing in Irving's patellar tendon, the fractured patella has fully healed and Irving's knee has been found to be completely structurally sound."

Irving sought second opinions this week after soreness in his left knee failed to dissipate with extended rest.

Marcus Smart will undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb.

The Celtics hope Smart could return within six weeks and participate in the playoffs.

Gordon Hayward Suffered Setback In Recovery

Mar 15, 2018 5:58 PM

Danny Ainge revealed Gordon Hayward suffered a minor setback in his recovery from a fractured ankle but is now back on track.

"[Hayward] had like one setback for a couple of weeks, maybe a month and a half ago. We were progressing a little bit too fast, we thought," Ainge said. "But, other than that, his work ethic and his determination have been amazing.

"I don't want to get people's hopes up. He still is not back on the basketball court and we have a month left in the regular season. He's got a ways to go but we're excited about his progress and his determination."

Hayward's setback may have been why Brad Stevens recently made an emphatic declaration that he would not return this season.

Hayward has tried to leave open the possibility of playing this season.

"The hope [of a return] is still there. It's something where I'm really honestly not even thinking about it," Hayward said during an appearance at a community event on Monday in Boston. "I know we're getting toward the end of the year, it's something that I'm still working toward, but if it doesn't happen it doesn't happen.

"My thoughts are that I take it day by day. And I said that from the very beginning, that's what I would do, not putting a timetable on it. The recovery is going well, I'm progressing well."
