Celtics-Lakers Christmas Day Game Averages 5M Viewers, Down 18% From Last Year

Dec 28, 2023 1:40 AM

The Christmas Day game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics averaged 5 million viewers, representing an 18% decline from last year's window. Despite the decline, it was the most watched game of the season thus far.

At least four out of the five games saw a decline from last year, with figures not available for the Warriors-Nuggets matchup.

The opening game between the Bucks and Knicks averaged 2.49 million viewers, down 39% from the Sixers-Knicks last year.

The Mavs-Suns game was down 42% with 1.47 million viewers, with the Sixers-Heat down 73% with 1.3 million viewers.

All three NFL games on Monday averaged more than 27 million viewers.

Celtics Monitoring Potential Trade For Kelly Olynyk

Dec 25, 2023 2:46 PM

The Boston Celtics are reportedly looking to upgrade their depth before the NBA trade deadline on February 8. That has Boston looking at a familiar face as a potential frontcourt reinforcement.

The Celtics are interested in trading for Kelly Olynyk of the Utah Jazz. Olynyk spent the four seasons of his career in Boston.

This season, in mostly a reserve role, the 6-foot-11 forward/center has played well for the Jazz. Olynyk is averaging 7.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 21.9 minutes per game. In addition, Olynyk is shooting 55% from the field, including 42% from behind the arc.

One potential stumbling block to a trade is Olynyk's $12.2 million salary. It would be difficult for the Celtics to match that salary in a trade without trading a current rotation player. Boston's other option would be to combine the salaries of several players on minimum contracts.

Jayson Tatum Day-To-Day With Ankle Sprain

Dec 21, 2023 9:40 AM

Jayson Tatum rarely misses games for the Boston Celtics. In his career, Tatum has missed only a handful of games each season, and most of those have been scheduled rest days. That made Tatum missing Wednesday's game at the Sacramento Kings a notable occasion.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said Tatum is considered day-to-day due to the sprained left ankle he suffered on Tuesday night at the Golden State Warriors. Tatum finished that game but said afterwards that he had swelling and stiffness in his left ankle.

Boston now has two days off on this west coast swing. They next play on Saturday afternoon at the LA Clippers. Then Boston completes the road trip with a Christmas Day matchup at the Los Angeles Lakers. It's unknown if Tatum will be available for either of those games.

Celtics Will Be Aggressive In Targeting Bench Help

Dec 19, 2023 9:17 AM

The Boston Celtics will reportedly be aggressive in targeting bench help. Boston is believed to be looking to add depth ahead of the February 8 trade deadline.

Earlier this week, the Celtics were linked to Isaiah Stewart of the Detroit Pistons. Boston has been rumored to be looking at adding another rotation big since the offseason.

The challenge for the Celtics is that they don't have a lot of tradable outgoing salary. The bigger salaries all belong to rotation players, making an upgrade hard to find. Boston does have a $6.2 million TPE that could be used in a deal. Otherwise, their best matching salary involves Al Horford or Payton Pritchard (both rotation players) or piecing together several players on minimum contracts.

Celtics, Thunder, Mavericks Have Shown Interest In Isaiah Stewart

Dec 18, 2023 9:37 AM

The Detroit Pistons are expected to evaluate trade options, as their losing streak has stretched to 23 consecutive games. Several Pistons veterans will be discussed in trade talks, but one younger player is also drawing interest around the league.

Detroit big man Isaiah Stewart has drawn trade interest from the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks. All three teams are contenders that could be looking for additional frontcourt depth.

One challenge in trading for Stewart is that he's poison pill restricted. Because Stewart signed a four-year, $60 million extension that will kick in next season, his outgoing and incoming salaries differ in a trade.

Stewart counts as $5.3 million in outgoing salary on the Pistons side. For a team acquiring Stewart, he will count for $13.1 million, which is the average of his current salary, plus his four-year extension.

Kristaps Porzingis Says He'll Play Friday Vs Knicks

Dec 6, 2023 9:30 AM

Kristaps Porzingis appears poised to make his return to the Boston Celtics. Porzingis posted on his Instagram feed that he'll be "lined up for the next game".

That seemingly has Porzingis lined up to play against his former team, the New York Knicks, on Friday. Both the Celtics and Knicks were eliminated from the In-Season Tournament this week and will meet in Boston on Friday night.

The Celtics big man has missed Boston's last four games with a strained left calf. Porzingis was injured on November 24, when he came up limping in a game at the Orlando Magic. Porzingis left that game early and hasn't played since.

In 15 games this season, Porzingis has averaged 18.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. He's also shooting a career-best 54.7% from the field in his first season with the Celtics.

Celtics To Be Active In Trade Market

Dec 5, 2023 11:11 AM

The Boston Celtics are expected to be active in the trade market, according to Shams Charania of FanDuelTV. Charania expects Boston to be looking to upgrade their bench ahead of the February 8 trade deadline.

The Celtics still have control over most of their future first-round picks but are limited in the ability to match salary in trade. Most of Boston's higher-salary players are key rotation players.

Brad Stevens does have a $6.2 million trade exception that he could offer to make a lower-salary acquisition. The Celtics could also combine the salaries of several minimum salary players to make a deal.
