Joe Mazzulla Apologized To Andre Drummond For 'Hack-A' Strategy

Nov 29, 2023 9:04 AM

The Boston Celtics knew they were chasing point differential totals to advance in the In-Season Tournament. Boston needed to not only beat the Orlando Magic, but they had to stay far enough in front of the Brooklyn Nets too. The led to Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla having his team employ the "Hack-A" strategy on Chicago Bulls center Andre Drummond in the fourth quarter on Tuesday.

Following the game, Mazzulla apologized to Drummond for the tactic. Mazzulla also said he talked with Bulls coach Billy Donovan about how the circumstances weren't just about staying in front of the Magic, but also the Nets.

For his part, Donovan said he didn't like Boston intentionally fouling Drummond. Donovan said, "I just felt bad for Andre in that situation." However, Donovan said he understood the Celtics were chasing the point differential tiebreaker to win Group C.

Jaylen Brown of the Celtics also said he didn't like the situation, even if he understood why it was a necessary one.

Jrue Holiday: Bucks Got What They Wanted, So I Can't Be Mad At That

Nov 22, 2023 1:57 PM

Jrue Holiday doesn't hold a grudge against the Milwaukee Bucks for trading him to the Portland Trail Blazers for Damian Lillard on the eve of the season. Holiday was eventually traded again to the Boston Celtics, who will play the Bucks for the first time this season on Wednesday.

"I think that they got what they wanted, so I can't be mad at that," said Holiday.

"A warning would've been cool. But other than that, I'm in the best place that I can be to compete against them, which is for the top team in the East and, hopefully, the top team in the league."

Holiday spent three seasons with the Bucks after coming over in a trade before the 2020-21 season from the New Orleans Pelicans.

Jayson Tatum Called Preseason Meeting With Celtics 'Six Starters'

Nov 22, 2023 9:36 AM

Before the Boston Celtics started the season, Jayson Tatum took it upon himself to call a meeting. This meeting included the Celtics "six starters" of Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis and Derrick White. No coaches or other teammates were present, only the six veterans gathered for a talk about the upcoming season.

"I wanted us to get in the room and talk about it," Tatum told ESPN. "We all are human and have feelings, and I opened the floor and basically said, 'There's six of us. Only five can play at one time. One of us is not going to finish the game all the time.

"Whether it's fair or not, me and JB are probably going to always start, and always finish the game. But we have to be held to a different standard and be able to be coached differently. Whether it's KP and Al, one of you guys may not finish a game, and you have to be OK with that."

Tatum's goal was to head off any problems down the line, when losing games could spark dissension.

"This was a time where, if you're not OK with it, let's talk about it," Tatum said. "I didn't want everybody to, before the season started, say, 'Yeah, I'm, I'm fine with it. Whatever.' And then, you know, we'll lose a couple games, and then things build up.

"It offered a time for us to all be on the same page and express that we were OK. ... It was a great meeting."

Jaylen Brown Questionable For Sunday With Right Adductor Strain

Nov 18, 2023 7:01 PM

Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown is questionable for Sunday's game at the Memphis Grizzlies due to a right adductor strain. Brown was injured when he slipped on the In-Season Tournament court in Toronto on Friday night.

Brown wasn't the only player to slip on the court throughout the game. Postgame, Brown said some of the courts need work.

“I slipped. That’s it. I slipped,” Brown said. “I think I might have strained my groin a little bit. We’ll see how it feels, but the court was just slippery all game. I think as players we’re all here for the In-Season Tournament because it’s going to generate revenue, excitement, competition but we’ve got to make sure the floor is safe to play on. We can’t put our player out here and risk their health. Tonight, I thought the floor was unacceptable. I think guys were slipping all over the place, not just me.”

Toronto's Precious Achiuwa also said the court was slippery.

“It was slippery,” Achiuwa said when told of Brown’s post-game comment. “I fell myself a few times. A couple of times I ended up on the floor. I slipped a few times. I’m extra cautious. Ending up on the floor is kind of like, 'OK, I’m checking myself.' I’m trying to make sure everything is intact. At the end of the day, I just want to hoop.”
