Luol Deng Had 'Life In Danger' With Spinal Tap Complications

Jul 30, 2013 2:36 PM

Luol Deng was disappointed with missing the Chicago Bulls' last seven playoff games due to complications with his spinal tap procedure, but he also feared for his life during his battle with the issue.

"My body didn’t react well to the spinal tap, I had some serious side effects that not only didn’t allow me to play basketball, but really put my life in danger," Deng said. "It’s something that I wouldn’t want anyone to go through, but when I went through it, I think that basketball became second – especially that because what I went through health wise, my family was very worried.

"I never want to experience something like that again."

Deng has made the NBA All-Star team two straight seasons.

Michael Reinsdorf Likely To Succeed Father As Chairman Of Bulls

Jul 27, 2013 8:57 PM

Michael Reinsdorf is likely to succeed his father as chairman of the Chicago Bulls.

Michael, the second of Jerry Reinsdorf’s four children, has been representing the Bulls at NBA Board of Governors meetings for the last eight years.

"I found that I was unable or unwilling to devote the time to the Bulls that needed to be devoted," Jerry Reinsdorf said. "He was fully ready to step into that position. And I always felt that I undermanaged the Bulls by not being there on an everyday basis."

Said Michael: "I think there was a little bit of a feeling among some people that, well, Jerry's passionate about the White Sox but not passionate about the Bulls. And I think having myself involved here makes it clear to the people inside the office and the people outside the office that the Chicago Bulls are incredibly important to my father."

The elder Reinsdorf has handed many of the day-to day operations over to his son.

"I think he's more involved in the Bulls now from a business perspective, now that I'm here, because I talk to him on a daily basis," Michael Reinsdorf said. "There are times I try to push off decisions to him, and he pushes it right back to me."

Thibodeau Dismisses Rumors Of Rift With Forman

Jul 25, 2013 10:10 PM

Tom Thibodeau dismissed rumors of a rift between himself and Gar Forman over the Chicago Bulls’ decision to part ways with lead assistant Ron Adams.

"People are going to read into things the way they want to," Thibodeau said. "We’re fine. We’re both thinking about next season and all we can do to win."

Forman also tried to dispel rumors of discord.

"We're in constant communication," Forman said last week during the Vegas Summer League. "We have a high level of communication and I think a high level of trust and we continue to work together to try to make this team the best that it can be. Our working relationship has been good and continues to be good and we continue to communicate on the things we feel we need to do in order to continue to improve."

Brother: Derrick Rose 'Ready To Go'

Jul 23, 2013 2:07 PM

Derrick Rose's brother, Reggie Rose, spoke with the media about how his recovery from a torn ACL is progressing.

"He was getting up at 6:30 every morning and working out with (Bulls assistant strength and conditioning coach) Nick Papendieck," Reggie Rose said. "He has a positive attitude. He's ready to go."

Rose expects to return for the preseason.

"Looking at his body, he's really strong. The only thing he has to work on is cardio and getting in game shape. But that will come (in training camp). I have no concerns about him physically."

Reggie Rose expected his brother to receive a backlash in not returning from his injury last season.

"Coming from Englewood, if someone says something negative about us or our family, it's like brushing crumbs off our shoulders," Reggie Rose said. "It's nothing to us. We made it through Englewood.

"Everybody is entitled to their opinion. That's all it was."

Reggie Rose also spoke of the loss of assistant coach Ron Adams.

"He'll come back at the level he was at before, and he's going to have a better jump shot when he comes back," Reggie Rose said. "He does a whole lot of shooting drills. He used to put up a lot of shots with Coach Adams. Unfortunately, Coach Adams isn't here anymore. That was kind of like his shooting buddy. And Coach Adams did a great job all last year and basically since he was in Chicago before the Bulls let him go."

Bulls Waive Malcolm Thomas

Jul 23, 2013 1:49 PM

The Chicago Bulls waived Malcolm Thomas on Tuesday.

RealGM's Shams Charania reported the Bulls' decision in regards to the guarantee on Thomas' contract on Monday.

A source cited the Bulls' salary situation as the reason for waiving Thomas. The Bulls are interested in re-signing Thomas at a later point.

“I’ve worked on my strength, a lot of offense and defense,” Thomas told RealGM after the Bulls’ final summer league game. “I’ve worked on pretty much everything. … There’s always stuff that I could have done better, but overall our team played well here and I think I played good.”

Bulls Unable To Retain Malcolm Thomas

Jul 22, 2013 7:38 PM

After averaging 11 points, 15 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in summer league, Malcolm Thomas won’t be retained by the Chicago Bulls into next season due to the franchise’s salary situation, a league source told RealGM.

As the guarantee date on Thomas’ contract approached, the Bulls weren’t able to keep the 6-foot-9 forward. Thomas had a breakout showing in summer league for the second straight year, highlighted by a record 22-rebound performance.

Thomas had been confident about his future with the Bulls, and he has always intrigued the organization. The Bulls remain interested in bringing back Thomas at some point, a source said, but he is expected to draw interest from several NBA teams.

Before leaving for Las Vegas, Thomas had spent the offseason working out at the Bulls’ practice facility.

“I’ve worked on my strength, a lot of offense and defense,” Thomas told RealGM after the Bulls’ final summer league game. “I’ve worked on pretty much everything. … There’s always stuff that I could have done better, but overall our team played well here and I think I played good.”

Thomas, 24, played five games for the Golden State Warriors last season before finishing the season with the Bulls. He averaged 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds in seven games for Chicago.
