Derrick Rose Looking Ahead To Free Agency In 2017

Sep 29, 2015 10:38 AM

Derrick Rose acknowledged he's already thinking about free agency despite it being two seasons away in 2017.

Rose was answering a question about his mindset amid a civil suit filed against him.

"This whole summer I had tunnel vision," he said. "My mindset was just making sure that I was working out every day and spending as much time as possible with my son and focusing on them two things.

"Making sure that my family is financially stable -- as far as, you see all the money that they're passing out in this league, [I'm] just telling the truth, just knowing that my day will be coming up soon. It's not for me, it's for [son] P.J. and his future. so that's what I'm thinking about right now."

Rose believes his future will still be with the Chicago Bulls, but wants to keep the possibilities open.

"It's here," he said. "But when you talk about that much money, the only thing you can do is prepare for it, trying to prepare not only myself but my family. I'm doing all of this for my son. I'm thinking about his future even though we're all right, we're comfortable. When you talk about that 'X' amount of dollars, I think it raises everyone's eyebrows. It's nothing wrong with being over-prepared."

Rose signed a five-year max extension worth close to $95 million before the 11-12 season.

76ers Pursued Jimmy Butler, Kawhi Leonard In Restricted Free Agency

Sep 23, 2015 4:24 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers broached the possibility of signing Jimmy Butler and Kawhi Leonard to an offer sheet during their restricted free agency. Their interest was described as "due diligence."

But there was little chance of either playing choosing to sign with the 76ers at this stage in their rebuild.

The 76ers almost entirely sat out free agency, not even pursuing younger players on cheap contracts.

Taj Gibson On Schedule Returning From Ankle Surgery

Sep 12, 2015 12:39 PM

Taj Gibson is on schedule to return within the four-month timeframe given to him when he underwent surgery on his left ankle.

Gibson revealed he had played through a torn ligament.

"When (the doctor) finally went in during surgery, he was astounded how I was able to still play," Gibson said Saturday morning. "He said he never knew anybody who could play through so much pain. I just thought it was normal. He was surprised I was even able to run or lift off it. That’s how bad it was. But he did a great job. I was just blessed. The way they were all talking during the surgery and after the rehab, I’m lucky and optimistic."

Gibson said he is running and cutting and mostly performing one-on-one basketball drills.

"The crazy part about it is (executive vice president) John Paxson came into the training camp and showed me the same exact surgery," Gibson said. "It was like they tighten and really reconstructed the ligament. The ligament was completely torn off. So far, it’s been stiff and really tight. I really can’t turn it. Plus, I wear a better ankle support now.

"The whole point is getting it stronger. The doctors said with more reps and running, it will get stronger. I’ve been doing mostly one-on-one and cutting off it. They’ve been slowing my progress. They don’t want me to rush. I’m in good shape but I’m doing what the doctor tells me to do. The doctor told I’m ahead of schedule. But he wants me to still be cautious and take my time."
