Dion Waiters Thinks He'll Become NBA's Best Shooting Guard

Aug 30, 2013 8:52 PM

Dion Waiters believes he can develop into the NBA’s best shooting guard.

“Without a doubt, I really believe that [I’ll eventually be the best shooting guard in the NBA],” Waiters said. “This year, I’m going to show a lot of people who doubted me and still doubt me. I’m going to show them. And I don’t need praise and all of that. I just want to be respected. I’m coming. That’s all I have to say. I’ve taken my work ethic to another level and I feel as though I still have something to prove. So, watch out.”

Waiters is ready to take his game to another level.

“I’m coming,” he said. “I just feel as though I’m next up as far as shooting guards. If you look around, you know, Kobe [Bryant] and [Dwyane] Wade and those guys, they paved the way for a player like me and they’re almost done. It’s not like that, but I’m just saying, I’m coming. I just want everybody to know that.”

Kenny Kadji Rejects Overseas Offers For Deal With Cavaliers

Aug 30, 2013 5:32 PM

Undrafted forward Kenny Kadji has agreed to sign a non-guaranteed contract and play in training camp with the Cleveland Cavaliers, a league source told RealGM.

Kadji, 25, turned down several substantial offers from European clubs to focus on starting his career in the NBA. He will travel to Cleveland next week to begin preparing for camp.

Kadji was on the Cavaliers’ summer league team in July, averaging 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds.

After putting up nearly 13 points and seven rebounds per game as a senior at the University of Miami, Kadji wasn’t selected in the June NBA draft. At 6-foot-10, he also has a smooth touch from outside, shooting 35.1 percent from three-point range last season.

Grant 'Blown Away' By Bynum's Commitment To Rehab

Aug 17, 2013 8:26 AM

Chris Grant is more than pleased by Andrew Bynum’s commitment to rehabilitation and conditioning.

Bynum is recovering from a series of knee problems that forced him to miss the entire 2012-13 season.

"I have absolutely been blown away by his approach," Grant said. "Literally, [from] the day we signed him, the next day he was here and he has been here every day but Sunday working. During this rehab, this progression, obviously we have a very detailed plan that he's been on and he's following it to a T."

So far this offseason, the Cavaliers added Bynum, who could return to All-Star form if healthy, Earl Clark to play both forward spots and Jarrett Jack to provide depth behind Kyrie Irving.

"Of whatever, my 20 years [in or around the NBA], this has been the busiest offseason I've ever been involved in," Grant said. "I haven't had an opportunity to step away. ... We're excited. We've got a lot of new significant pieces, so we're excited to see what it looks like when we step out there."

Irving Sidesteps Question About Signing Max Extension With Cavaliers

Aug 10, 2013 9:20 PM

Kyrie Irving wasn’t interested in discussing his future with the Cleveland Cavaliers while attending his basketball camp Saturday in Independence, Ohio.

When asked why he qualified previous comments about being happy with the Cavaliers by saying “right now,” Irving responded: “Right now I’m a Cavalier. This is where I am. All that future stuff, I’m not really worried about. I’m living in the moment right now and I’m just trying to get better with the teammates I have now and make the playoffs for Cleveland. That’s the only thing I can do right now is give it my all as it stands right now and that future stuff, I’m not really worried about it.”

Asked directly if he would sign a maximum five-year extension with the Cavaliers next summer, Irving said, “I’m not really worried about that right now. Right now I’m focusing on the year ahead, my third year, then I’ll worry about that in the summer time.”

Irving could opt out of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent in 2016.

Tristan Thompson Switches Dominant Shooting Hand

Aug 10, 2013 9:18 PM

Tristan Thompson has decided to shoot with his right hand instead of his left.

“I was in Phoenix (last November) and I just started shooting right-handed and got a lot of compliments on it,” said Thompson, who’s nearly ambidextrous. “A week later when we got back to Cleveland and got one of the ball-boys to record me and I shot 100 jumpers with my left and 100 with my right and it was significantly better with my right-hand. There was just a better flow to it with my right, it looked smoother.”

Chris Grant and the Cavaliers have supported the change, even going so far as to hire a shooting coach to work with Thompson over the offseason.

“He’s the kind of guy that will have success because his work ethic is off the charts,” said Grant. “He’s very, very diligent about it. … From our standpoint we believe in him so much as a person — he’s exactly what we want our team to be about — it was a pretty easy decision. He came to us and said he wanted to do this and we helped him lay out a plan to make it happen. We laid out benchmarks for him and he surpassed them very quickly.”

Jack Cooley Rejects Partially Guaranteed NBA Deals For Turkish Team

Aug 11, 2013 12:34 PM

Before signing with Turkey’s Trabzonspor, Memphis Grizzlies summer league forward Jack Cooley turned down training camp invites – including multiple partially guaranteed deals – from 10 NBA teams, his agent Adam Pensack told RealGM.

Cooley had received camp deals and some partially guaranteed offers out of the Portland Trail Blazers, Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers, Pensack said. Even so, the Turkish club gave Cooley an offer too lucrative to reject.

“He will play a lot against top level competition and will come back next year even more ready for the NBA,” Pensack said.

Cooley, a 22-year-old forward at 6-foot-9, averaged 15 points and 9.2 rebounds over six games with the Grlzzlies in the Las Vegas summer league. He averaged 13.1 points and 10.1 rebounds in his senior season at Notre Dame, going undrafted in the June NBA draft.

Cooley is expected to pursue a deal in the NBA next offseason.

Thompson On Team Canada: People Actually Think We Can Win

Aug 6, 2013 11:35 PM

The level of competition for Team Canada's Senior Men's basketball team is higher than it has ever been in the past.

Most of the training camp attendees are young players who lack international basketball experience, but have made names for themselves in the NBA or overseas.

Tristan Thompson was asked whether there’s any pressure on the team.

“No, not really," said Thompson. "We’re going to go out there and compete. Everyone thinks we’re young and inexperienced. We’re just going to put all our cards out and see what happens.”

Thompson hopes to bring leadership despite still being just 22 years old.

“Coming here with my NBA background and leadership, looking to rally all the troops together. This is really the first opportunity really where Canada’s had a team where people actually think we can win.

“I’m just coming here with the mindset of a leader and we’re going to go out there and win.”

Canada plays two games against Jamaica this Thursday and Saturday at the Jack Donohue Classic before heading over to Venezuela for the Americas Tournament, where the four semifinalists will qualify for the FIBA World Championships in Spain next year.
