Former Laker Ron Harper Joins Pistons Coaching Staff

Aug 30, 2005 4:57 PM

The Detroit Pistons rounded out their coaching staff -- again -- Tuesday by naming Ron Harper an assistant coach.

Harper joins Sidney Lowe, Don Zierden, Igor Kokoskov, Kevin Wilson, and Brendan O'Conner on Coach Flip Saunders' staff.

Harper played 15 years in the NBA, winning five championships, in Chicago and Los Angeles. His last ring came in 2000 with the Lakers. He spent the early years of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers.

In the days following his hiring, Saunders' staff was advertised as being much smaller than the 7-man crew former Coach Larry Brown carried.

After originally being declared "complete" by Saunders and President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars following the appointment of Lowe and Zierden to join holdovers Kokoskov and O'Conner, the team has since added Wilson and now Harper.

Petrie Doesn't Expect To Match Evans' Detroit Offer

Aug 25, 2005 9:43 AM

Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations, said Wednesday the team is unlikely to match the offer sheet that Maurice Evans signed with the Pistons.

In reality, the Kings don't have bargaining power. Their mid-level exception is gone, and they don't have much spare money left under the salary cap.

Pistons Sign Mo Evans To $4.5 Million Offer Sheet

Aug 24, 2005 6:54 PM

The Detroit Pistons have signed Sacramento's Maurice Evans to a three-year $4.5 million-dollar offer.

The Kings have seven days to match the offer to retain Evans, a restricted free agent.

Detroit wants to add the six-foot-five, 220-pound Evans because he would provide depth behind starting small forward Tayshaun Prince and shooting guard Richard Hamilton.

He would compete with Carlos Delfino and Ronald Dupree for playing time, if Sacramento doesn't match the offer.

Next For The Pistons, A Tayshaun Prince Contract

Aug 24, 2005 12:25 PM

Surprise Pistons star Tayshaun Prince will go into the final year of his rookie contract next season which is set to earn him $1.7 million.  After next season, Prince will be a one of the most highly coveted players on the market, and even though he will be a restricted free agent meaning the Pistons can match any offer, the organization does not want it to come to that as they are hoping to get a new deal done by training camp.

"It's certainly on our radar for priority," said John Hammond, the Pistons' vice president of basketball operations. "We'd like to get something done by training camp."

Pistons Take Themselves Out of Finley Sweepstakes, Sign Veteran Davis

Aug 22, 2005 4:24 PM

Detroit Pistons President Joe Dumars has grown weary of waiting on coveted free agent swingman Michael Finley, signing Indiana Pacers free agent power forward Dale Davis to a two year contract.

Davis, 36, would replace Elden Campbell on the Pistons' roster in the role of veteran "Shaq-Insurance."

The Pistons used part of their mid-level exception to sign the former all-star, all but eliminating the chances for the team to acquire Finley. The Pistons may use the rest of the exception on Minnesota Timberwolves free agent swingman Latrell Sprewell.

Ex-Piston Jenkins Is Headed To Israel

Aug 22, 2005 4:34 AM

Former Pistons guard Horace Jenkins is packing his bags again for another overseas adventure.

Jenkins signed a one-year deal with Hapoel Jerusalem, a team in the Israeli premier league. Rickey Paulding, a Detroit native and 2004 Pistons draft pick, played for Hapoel last season.

Jenkins has played overseas before, with Greek and Italian teams.

Jenkins was a small sensation last season when he made the Pistons' roster as a rookie at age 30.

He went from working odd jobs after college to pursuing his NBA dreams through Europe. He landed with the Pistons, thanks to being spotted by team president Joe Dumars on a videotape of another player.

Jenkins didn't see much action, averaging just 6.9 minutes and 1.8 points in 15 regular-season games.

Sprewell Will Go To Houston Or Detroit If Finley Joins Heat

Aug 20, 2005 11:50 PM

Minnesota small forward Latrell Sprewell reportedly will pick between Houston and the Pistons, if Finley picks Miami.

Sprewell's agent, Robert Gist, didn't return calls seeking comment.

Sprewell has found a cold market for him since turning down a multi-year extension from the Wolves before the 2004-2005 season.

Finley Biding His Time

Aug 20, 2005 11:49 PM

Some published reports Friday said Finley, a free-agent guard/forward from Dallas whom the Pistons covet, was a certainty to sign with Miami.

But several league officials contacted Friday said that's not accurate and that the Pistons are still thick in the Finley waiting game.

It seems clear that Finley, 32, who cleared waivers Thursday, isn't rushing into a decision.

His top two choices appear to be the Heat -- home of Shaquille O'Neal, a revamped roster and high expectations for 2005-06 -- and the Pistons, who can offer the same money ($5 million) for a job backing up Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton.

Minnesota, Denver and San Antonio also reportedly have talked to Finley's representatives. Finley became a free agent after the Mavericks bought him out under the NBA's new amnesty clause.

Dale Davis Narrows Destinations To Seattle And Detroit

Aug 19, 2005 9:52 AM

Dale Davis' agent Chubby Wells has told Locked On Sports that his client has narrowed his free agent options down to Detroit and Seattle.

With the loss of Jerome James and potential loss of Reggie Evans, Davis figures to get more playing time in Seattle, and could even compete for a starting spot, while playing in Detroit would mean backing up Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace.

Pistons Still Wait On Finley, Positioning For Spree As Plan B

Aug 19, 2005 1:29 AM

The Pistons are among the few teams still hoping to land Michael Finley, a free-agent forward. They also are talking to guard Latrell Sprewell.

The Heat, Pistons, Suns, Spurs and Nuggets are on the short list for Finley, the hottest free agent in the market.

"We're still hopeful," John Hammond, the Pistons' vice president of basketball operations, said Thursday evening. "We want to be in the running."

Finley, 32, has not tipped his hand about his next destination. There is also no timetable for his decision.

Henry Thomas, Finley's agent, did not return phone calls Thursday.
