Stan Van Gundy Calls Pistons' Job His Last In NBA

Dec 30, 2014 1:27 PM

Stan Van Gundy said on Tuesday that his current job as president and head coach of the Detroit Pistons will be his last job with an NBA team.

Van Gundy, 55, said he promised his family that he would not relocate again but is open to coaching beyond his current five-year contract.

“I promised my wife,” he said. “I wanted one more shot at it. I’ve got a great owner. I’ve got a great situation with great tradition, and I should be able to get it turned around in the time that he’s given me. If I don’t, I don’t. But I should be able to. But this’ll be the last one.

“That’s the last move we’re going to make.”

Josh Smith Agrees To Sign With Rockets

Dec 24, 2014 1:24 PM

Josh Smith has agreed to sign with the Houston Rockets.

Smith was waived this week by the Detroit Pistons.

Smith has been promised a spot in the starting lineup and now has the opportunity to play beside former AAU teammate Dwight Howard. Smith only would consider clubs offering a starting spot, which limited his options to the Rockets and Miami Heat

Smith will likely sign a deal with the Rockets for the biannual exception of $2 million once he clears waivers at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings also had interest in Smith.

Rockets Emerge As Favorites To Sign Josh Smith

Dec 23, 2014 10:41 AM

The Houston Rockets have improved their position as frontrunner to sign Josh Smith.

Beyond Smith's close friend Dwight Howard, there's confidence among Rockets' players that they'll be able to sign him.

The Rockets tried to acquire Smith in the 2013 offseason, but were unable to put together a sign-and-trade deal with the Atlanta Hawks. Before ultimately signing a four-year $56 million deal with Detroit, Smith had long had interest in finding a way to join the Rockets, sources said.

Houston can use its biannual exception, worth $2.077 million annually, to sign Smith.

The Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat also have interest in Smith.

Pistons Waive Josh Smith

Dec 22, 2014 1:11 PM

The Detroit Pistons have waived Josh Smith.

Smith is owed $26 million over the next two seasons and the Pistons will use the stretch provision on his contract to give the team some cap relief.

The Sacramento Kings made multiple overtures to sign Smith in the offseason, but Stan Van Gundy wanted to try to make his frontcourt of Smith, Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe work.

“Our team has not performed the way we had expected throughout the first third of the season and adjustments need to be made in terms of our focus and direction,” said Van Gundy.  “We are shifting priorities to aggressively develop our younger players while also expanding the roles of other players in the current rotation to improve performance and build for our future.  As we expand certain roles, others will be reduced.  In fairness to Josh, being a highly versatile 10-year veteran in this league, we feel it’s best to give him his freedom to move forward.  We have full respect for Josh as a player and a person.”

Marc Stein reports that the Pistons aggressively shopped Smith in recent weeks, but the Kings were the only team to show any real interest.

Andre Drummond Apologizes For Posting Photo Of Driving 97 MPH

Dec 8, 2014 12:12 PM

Andre Drummond apologized for posting a photo of him driving 97 m.p.h. on social media.

"Yes," Drummond said. "It was a silly mistake. I'll own up to it and move on from here. It won't happen again."

Stan Van Gundy was concerned about the speed of Drummond's driving.

"It's not just an example; it's safety," Van Gundy said. "I still to this day every time I see Gortat, I ask him if he's slowed down. It's scary to me.

"I know you're young and you think you're indestructible, but for the people that care about you, it's scary as hell. I don't want to wake up and read about Andre Drummond in an accident. That's the issue to me."

Stan Van Gundy: We Have A Messed Up Team

Dec 3, 2014 1:17 PM

Stan Van Gundy believes the Detroit Pistons played harder in the preseason and have been outworked by every team they've played since their loss at the Memphis Grizzlies a few weeks ago.

"There's no dilemmas in the preseason. No dilemmas," Van Gundy said. "No one cares how many shots they're getting. Everybody knows everybody's gonna play so everybody's spirits are up. You're not worried about stats. … No one cares. Same in practice. You practice hard, do what you're supposed to do."

The Pistons shot just 36.7 percent against a Los Angeles Lakers' team that is bad on defense.

"I think we took a lot of tough shots with people open," Van Gundy said. "We have to show them those things. I have to do my job better. I'm not gonna say I have a selfish team or lazy team. We have a messed up team."
