Isiah Thomas Likely To Become Minority Owner Of Pistons

May 16, 2014 1:16 AM

Isiah Thomas and the Detroit Pistons are in talks for him to join the franchise's ownership group.

“Not a ceremonial piece, but a respectable piece,” said one source.

The discussions began after Joe Dumars stepped down as president. Even though Tom Gores targeted Stan Van Gundy to become head coach and president of basketball operations, he wanted to partner with Thomas.

The two became familiar during preparations for the Bad Boys reunion last month.

Van Gundy High On Greg Monroe

May 14, 2014 12:46 PM

The first major decision of Stan Van Gundy's tenure with the Detroit Pistons will be the restricted free agency of Greg Monroe.

Van Gundy is a big fan of Monroe's game and called him once a deal was struck on Tuesday evening.

The Pistons' ownership is also believed to be fond of Monroe.

With Monroe, Andre Drummond and Josh Smith, the Pistons had difficulties spreading the floor with the lack of shooting in the frontcourt.

Stan Van Gundy, Pistons Agree On $35M, Five-Year Deal

May 14, 2014 11:26 AM

The Detroit Pistons and Stan Van Gundy have reached agreement on a five-year, $35 million for him to become their head coach and president of basketball operations.

The deal was formally announced on Wednesday.

Van Gundy has been out of the NBA over the past two seasons after being fired by the Orlando Magic.

The Golden State Warriors were also very interested in Van Gundy, making him their top target, but they were unwilling to cede authority away from Bob Myers.

Sources say the opportunity for Van Gundy to have a Pat Riley-level say on basketball matters swayed him to choose the Pistons over the Warriors.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported that Van Gundy may hire Otis Smith to serve as day-to-day general manager.

Warriors Fly To OKC To Meet With Kerr

May 13, 2014 10:10 PM

With Stan Van Gundy nearing a deal with the Detroit Pistons worth $35 million over five seasons, the Golden State Warriors are flying to Oklahoma City to meet with Steve Kerr.

"There are still some details to be worked out," a source with knowledge of Van Gundy's talks with the Pistons said.

Van Gundy is expected to make a decision this week, sources told Yahoo!

Kerr and the New York Knicks have also been negotiating a contract.

The Warriors are making a final push to secure a deal with Kerr.

A source tells ESPN's Ramona Shelburne that they would be "shocked" if Kerr ends up coaching any team but the Knicks. Kerr and the Knicks have been in the final stages of negotiations for at least a week, but there's no timetable to complete a deal.

Pistons Pursuing Stan Van Gundy With Offer Of Full Control

May 13, 2014 12:50 PM

The Detroit Pistons are pursuing Stan Van Gundy with a lucrative offer to assume complete control of basketball operations in addition to become their head coach.

The Pistons are competing with the Golden State Warriors, who are aggressively pursuing Van Gundy for their coaching position.

The Pistons have a far less appealing roster than the Warriors, but he would have far more control in their organization. The Warriors have an entrenched general manager in Bob Myers and an active owner in Joe Lacob, in addition to Jerry West serving as a consultant.

The Pistons parted ways with Joe Dumars this season.

Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News reports that Van Gundy asked the Warriors for total control of the roster, but they declined making that opportunity available.
