Tom Izzo Hasn't Been In Touch With Pistons

Mar 26, 2014 12:05 AM

Tom Izzo insisted that he's happy at Michigan State and hasn't been in touch with the Detroit Pistons on their head coaching vacanc.y

"There's been so many rumors over the years," Izzo said on ESPN's "SportsCenter" on Tuesday. "I look at people I used to recruit against years ago [that] said that I'd be gone, but I'm still here and some of those schools have had three different coaches.

"I've always said I'd never say never to anything because you never know what it brings. But I got so much more work to do here. I have a great president, a great AD and a football coach that I really get along [with]. So this is a pretty good place for me right now. We're in a pretty good spot. Program's in pretty good shape.

"Ain't broke, so why fix it?"

Izzo has never met Pistons' owner Tom Gores, who is a Michigan State graduate.

"I swear to you, I have not talked to one soul from the Pistons," Izzo said.

Pistons To Address Job Status Of Joe Dumars, John Loyer After Season

Mar 23, 2014 2:14 PM

With Joe Dumars in the final season of his contract and John Loyer serving as an interim coach, Tom Gores said the Detroit Pistons will address the statuses of both once the season ends.

“We got to finish the season," Gores said. "We’re gonna get it done. We’re going to finish the season and then we’re gonna regroup and we’re going to reflect. But I’m not giving up on Detroit. I’m not giving up on our guys.”

When asked whether there will be a quick decision, Gores said: “After the season we’re going to address it right away. We have to, we have to. We have to let the season play out and we gotta get it done. We don’t wait around. I have one goal for us – to be competitive. Detroit needs us to be champions. They need us to be a champion.”

Gores added he feels the firing of Maurice Cheeks was "the right thing to do."

Dumars Expected To Resign As Pistons' President After Season

Mar 16, 2014 12:06 PM

Joe Dumars is expected to resign as president of the Detroit Pistons after the season.

The Pistons had playoff aspirations heading into the season, but the additions of Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings have created a mismatched roster.

The Pistons will lose their first round pick if it falls out of the top-8 due to the Ben Gordon for Corey Maggette trade from several years ago that saved the franchise $12 million.

Josh Smith, Rondo Casually Discuss One Day Playing On Same Team Again

Mar 10, 2014 1:53 AM

Rajon Rondo and Josh Smith discuss the possibility of playing on the same team again.

Rondo and Smith were teammates as Oak Hill.

"We call each other every once in a while to check up and see how one another is doing," Smith said on Sunday. "He's my best friend, especially in the NBA. We still talk all the time, and our families take vacations together. He's a very good friend."

Rondo will become a free agent in 2015.

"The conversation comes up," Smith admitted. "We always tell each other what a surreal moment that would be, for us to connect again. With the different free agencies that we have [Rondo comes off the Boston books in 2015; Smith is locked in through 2017], it could be far-fetched, but it could be possible. I tend to be an optimist."

"He is not a candidate for any job with the Pistons," Mark Barnhill wrote about Thomas in an email to MLive. Barnhill is a spokesman for owner Tom Gores.

The Pistons are in danger of missing the playoffs for the fifth straight season.

Report: Isiah Thomas Could Be Considered To Run Pistons' Front Office

Mar 1, 2014 6:58 PM

Tom Gores is seriously discussing whether to shake up the Detroit Pistons' front office after the season and could consider hiring Isiah Thomas as a lead decision-maker to replace Joe Dumars, according to a report citing sources.

“Gores is definitely looking at Isiah to replace Joe,” one source said.

The Pistons fired Maurice Cheeks in February and have fired eight coaches since 2000 under Dumars.

Thomas' familiarity with Mike Woodson could allow the Pistons to be a potential landing spot if the coach is fired by the New York Knicks at season's end.

Jennings Believes Cheeks Wasn't Given Sufficient Time As Pistons' Coach

Mar 1, 2014 1:49 AM

Maurice Cheeks was fired as head coach of the Detroit Pistons on Feb. 9 and the team is 2-6 since the firing.

Brandon Jennings still cannot believe Cheeks was let go 50 games into the season.

“You give a coach half a season with new faces and new chemistry, that’s not enough time,” Jennings said. “I felt like he was in a losing situation. We were winning and now we’re playing like the old Pistons, in the beginning."

Jennings had an efficient start to the season under Cheeks, a former point guard.

“I don’t have a problem with John (Loyer), just with the whole thing of changing coaches was one of the more difficult things for me,” Jennings said. “John was our assistant, so I know a lot about him. It was just a personal problem with Mo leaving.”
