The Seattle SuperSonics will host the San Antonio Spurs at 7 p.m. PST at the Key Arena, looking to make it three wins in a row over the NBA powerhouse, howerver they may have to do it minus a few important men.
Coach Nate McMillan is currently in North Carolina visiting his seriously ill mother while Ray Allen is nursing a case of the flu.
Nobody is sure if one or any of the two will show up for tonights showdown with the Spurs.
?We?ve got our work cut out for us,? Sonics associate head coach Dwane Casey said. ?That?s why we have to come in with our high beams on and our focus has to be totally on San Antonio regardless if Coach Mac is back or Ray is here.?
The Sonics are responsible for the Spurs only home loss of the season.
Raul Lopez is beginning to settle in as the point guard for Jerry Sloan's Utah Jazz. On Wednesday, he had a career-high 11 assists and matched his best scoring total with 20 points.
``We don't have to think about who scored more points. We won the game and that's what matters,'' said Lopez, who was making his sixth start of the season. ``We have a lot of games where people scored a lot of points and we lost.''
A bomb threat to KeyArena on Sunday after the Sonics defeated the Utah Jazz was determined to be a hoax, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer is reporting.
The threat was phoned in to KeyArena about 8:30 p.m. Seattle Police said it was a man's voice, though as of yesterday the identity of the caller had not been determined, according to a Seattle Center spokesperson. Arena staff suspected it was a hoax, and most fans had already left the building when arena personnel began urging everyone out and canceling postgame plans inside the facility.
The naysayer?s have been saying it from day one, this Sonics team is merely a fluke. And yet, they continue to win using their up-tempo, long range shooting, European style of basketball, which along with the Phoenix Suns, is transforming the NBA.
The Supersonics easily handled the underachieving Jazz last night 112-105, breaking a two game skid.
?We came out and played very hard from the get-go, and I thought a lot of that had to do with losing two games,? Antonio Daniels said. ?We had to bring our own motivation, and we did. We wanted to respond in the proper manner tonight.?
At first it seemed that the Sonics would cool off and have to adjust to the NBA, now it seems that the NBA must adjust to the Sonics.
According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, a bomb threat was phoned into KeyArena with about three minutes left in last night's game between the Sonics and the Utah Jazz.
No formal evacuation was called, but people were told to leave after arena staff consulted with the Seattle Police Department, which was searching the facility last night.
"Sometimes people linger, and there's things like postgame shows, so we canceled those," Seattle Center spokeswoman Kym Allen said.
Arena staff suspected the call was a prank, said Allen, who also said it is not uncommon for arenas to receive threats.
The news had players headed quickly for the exits, while people were already filing out by the time arena staff began urging people to leave. The only people left in the crowd were those with special postgame passes that allow people to stay after the game to meet with players or staff from one of the teams afterward.
Mike Tulumello of the East Valley Tribune report that the Seattle Super Sonics and star shooter Ray Allen appear to be no closer to an agreement on a new contract which will keep Allen in Seattle beyond this season, but neither side is panicking just yet.
The Sonics offer - $68 million over five years, with a starting salary of $11 million, is $3.5 million less than what Allen is making now, but it would still keep him as the highest paid player on the team.
Allen doesn?t appear willing to agree right now, and the Sonics don?t seem willing to change their offer much, either. Both sides indicate the trade deadline next month isn?t a drop-dead date, but Tulumello reports that?s how it could play out.
Allen has said he would consider playing for the Cavaliers if it came down to it when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. There?s one major reason why he would play in Cleveland despite the brutal snow and cold.
"LeBron James has taken his game to another level," Allen said. "And a lot of those guys have fed off of him.
"Anytime he plays hard and puts that passion into the team it makes them better."
A new collective bargaining agreement could dictate the amount that Allen will be able to sign for with any team, with maximum contract lengths set to be a key item for discussion between the league, the owners and the players.
The Seattle Supersonics nearly overcame a 58.1 percent performance shooting by the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 112-107 thriller at the Key Arena.
Timberwolves reserve Wally Szczerbiak scored a season-high 34 points off the bench to lead the Timberwolves to a stunning victory over the Sonics. Every time the Sonics made a run, Wally buried a clutch shot to keep them at bay, despite the late game heroics of Ray Allen and Sonics point guard Luke Ridnour who scored a career high 18 points.
Early Boykins single-handedly beat the Seattle Supersonics Tuesday night scoring 15 of Denver?s 21 overtime points and breaking the overtime scoring record of 14 set in 1984 by Butch Carter.
At 5-foot-5, Boykins is the NBA?s smallest player. His lack of size did not seem to matter last night as he drove through, shot over, and posted the Sonics up, using any method he wanted to score, seemingly scoring at will.
In overtime, Boykins took charge quickly. With 20 seconds gone, he scored on a 10-footer and then hit a 15-footer on a fast break with 3:49 left to put Denver ahead 99-95. After Boykins first two daggers, the Sonics could not recover.
With Sonics star Rashard Lewis sidelined with tendonitis in his left knee, reserve Vladimir Radmanovic helped lead Seattle to a 105-97 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, scoring 23 points and dishing out 11 assists.
"Vlade has a focus about him that he knows he's being counted on," Allen said. "He knows he's going to get shots. He's a big weapon for us."
LeBron James did not disappoint the fans at Key Arena scoring 35 points on 14-30 shooting and adding 11 assists.
With the win Seattle moves to 27-9 while Cleveland fell to 22-14.
