Chris Webber looked out of place at times with the Sixers, raising questions about his surgically repaired left knee and whether it would hold up through the final three years and $62 million of his contract.
"My knee feels great, and before February, nobody was saying anything about the knee," Webber said yesterday in a phone interview from his native Detroit, where he was collecting goods and money for victims of Hurricane Katrina. "The knee felt fine."
Although Webber won't say it, he wasn't happy with his role in the offense employed by former coach Jim O'Brien. Often used at the high post, the 6-foot-10 245-pounder in effect became a jump-shooter for the Sixers. He shot just 39.1 percent from the field in 21 regular-season games.
"Everybody says that I don't want to play in the low post, but that's not true," said Webber, who is getting ready for his 13th NBA season. Webber will enter the season without legal issues hanging over his head.
