Sixers Tried To Trade Dr. J For Jordan?

Apr 19, 2007 2:28 PM

In an interview for a forthcoming book, Harold Katz, the former Sixers owner, revealed something that he offered Julius Erving, the Hall of Fame forward, to Chicago on the eve of the 1984 draft for the third overall pick, which the Bulls used to select Michael Jordan.

"I thought I had a deal with Jonathan Kovler (then the principal owner) of the Bulls for the third pick," Katz told Pat Williams, once the Sixers' general manager, in an interview for "Pat Williams' Tales of the 1982-83 76ers."

Ultimately, Katz said, "Rod Thorn [then the Bulls' general manager] killed that one and took Michael Jordan. I would have made that deal."

Thorn, now the president of the New Jersey Nets, confirmed to Williams that Kovler approached him about such a deal, and that he rejected it.

Howard, Magic Keep Their Grip On Playoff Spot

Apr 14, 2007 7:23 PM

Dwight Howard is about to get a chance to extend his run of double-doubles, spectacular slams and big blocks into the postseason.

Howard was perfect for a half and dominant the whole game, scoring a career-high 35 points with 11 rebounds to lead the Magic to a 104-87 win over the 76ers on Saturday.

The Magic couldn't afford any slip-ups over the final games if they wanted to keep their grip on eighth place in the Eastern Conference since they would lose a tiebreaker with ninth-place Indiana.

But the Magic will clinch a playoff spot on Sunday if they beat Boston and the Pacers lose to New Jersey.

He will visit a doctor on Wednesday morning and coach Maurice Cheeks said the Sixers' leading scorer will not make the trip to Boston.

"I'd say it's worse now," Iguodala said. "Before, I could block [the pain] out. Now, I notice it when I play."

Toronto Wins First Division Title

Apr 7, 2007 12:53 AM

The Raptors are taking the Atlantic Division title north of the border.

Chris Bosh had 23 points and 13 rebounds for his seventh straight double-double to help Toronto win its first division title with a 94-85 win over the 76ers on Friday night.

"It's a start," coach Sam Mitchell said. "You come to all of these arenas and they have division championship banners up in the rafters. If you are trying to start a culture of winning, these guys need to start seeing the fruits of their labor and those things are important."

The Raptors, who already clinched their first postseason berth since 2002, won the Atlantic when Chicago beat New Jersey later Friday night. It marked the first time a Canadian-based team won a division title.
