Rudy Gobert, Jazz Agree To Five-Year, $205M Extension

Dec 20, 2020 10:37 AM

The Utah Jazz and Rudy Gobert have agreed to a five-year, $205 million extension.

"It means that they believe in me," Gobert told ESPN. "They believe in what we've been building over the years with this whole organization, with Coach [Quin Snyder] and all the guys. For me, it's an incredible blessing. It's a very motivating feeling to know that we all share the same vision and we all share this goal for this state and for this franchise."

Gobert was eligible for the same supermax extension worth $228 million Giannis Antetokounmpo signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. Gobert didn't request the full supermax to give the Jazz flexibility to continue building around Donovan Mitchell and him.

"For me, my goal is to always win a championship," said Gobert, who has a player option for the fifth season of the deal. "When we spoke with my agent before the negotiations started, I decided that I didn't want to ask for the supermax. We didn't want to start the negotiations by asking for the supermax. For me, it was important to show to the organization and show to the team that it wasn't about money. It was about continuing to build what we've been building and also give this team and give myself the stability and the peace of mind to not have to deal with the negotiations later.

"I want to win, and I feel like leaving this money on the table for the team just to be able to have better talent around me and Donovan was really important. I want to win, and I believe in this group and I believe in this organization, and I was willing to leave that money on the table for them."

Ryan Smith Was 'Really Close' To Bidding On Wolves Before Purchasing Jazz

Dec 18, 2020 3:15 PM

Ryan Smith was "really close" to making a bid for the Minnesota Timberwolves before he eventually purchased the Utah Jazz and their arena for $1.66 billion.

Smith was seriously considering taking the next step until his wife, Ashley, voiced her objection.

"With my wife, something wasn't right. She was putting her foot down," Smith told ESPN. "She was like, 'You know we're Jazz fans, right? That's what we do, and I'm not moving.' She doesn't put her foot down very often, but it was a nice reminder that I was kind of getting caught up in this other world because I liked the business side of it."

Smith approached Gail Miller, who initially rebuffed the interest before reengaging over the summer.

"Ryan Smith is a forward-thinking, community-minded entrepreneur and business leader who will be a fantastic addition to our league," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "As a lifelong fan of the Utah Jazz and more recently as one of their key marketing partners, Ryan has demonstrated his deep commitment to the Jazz and the Utah community, and there's no doubt he will bring that same level of dedication to the operation of the team."

Rudy Gobert Willing To Accept Below Supermax From Jazz In Extension Talks

Dec 17, 2020 3:20 PM

Rudy Gobert and the Utah Jazz continue to discuss a contract extension but it has been difficult for the media to get an accurate gauge on where each side stands on the negotiations. Gobert is eligible for a supermax but he is not holding out for that rich of a contract.

"I don't have prescise contract figures," said Tim MacMahon on the Brian Windhorst Podcast. "I have been told that he did not ask for the full supermax. I know there has been some reporting in Utah that he did. I've been told that is not true. That he did not ask for the full supermax.

"I don't know what neighborhood the Jazz are in. There's a gulf there. We will see if that gap is closed before the supermax extension deadline. He can also do a lesser extension during the season.

The relationship between Gobert and Donovan Mitchell also no longer appears to be a concern for Utah.

"The encouraging thing was after the way too public fallout between Donovan and Rudy Gobert, things between them went very smoothly in the bubble," added MacMahon. "It reaffirmed the Jazz's belief that it can continue to be a productive and personal partnership. Nobody is asking whether Donovan and Rudy can get along right now."
