Grunfeld: Arenas Close To Return

Dec 29, 2008 4:34 PM

Wizards' president Ernie Grunfeld believes guard Gilbert Arenas is close to returning to the court.

"He'll come back as soon as he's ready," Grunfeld said. "He's getting close."

However, Grunfeld knows no timetable for his return.

"I don't know," he said. "He's working hard but no timetable. Whenever he's ready."

Even if Washington is out of the playoff hunt when he is able to return, they want Arenas on the court so he can get into a rhythm with the team.

Wizards Top Thunder In NBA's Worst Matchup Ever

Dec 28, 2008 11:20 AM

The Wizards defeated the Thunder on Saturday night in an unwanted historic NBA game.

Until now there had never been an NBA game with two teams that had played at least 25 games and had the two worst records in the league, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"I don't feel we're a three-win team," Oklahoma City interim coach Scott Brooks said. "Unfortunately, we are."

Washington went into the game 4-23, while Oklahoma City entered the game 3-27.

"In abnormal circumstances, every game is a must-win," Wizards interim coach Ed Tapscott said.

Tapscott: Coaching Is Harder Than Front Office

Dec 24, 2008 4:21 PM

Wizards coach Ed Tapscott, who worked in the front office for the Bobcats and Wizards before replacing Eddie Jordan, believes that coaching is the more difficult job.

"I think the coaching is more difficult," Tapscott said. "It's more visceral, it's more emotional. It's more in real time. You work harder to moderate your responses because this is a marathon. That's something I had to get used to right away ? that you can't get angry every time it doesn't go your way."

Stevenson Sacrifices Start Streak To Aid Wizards

Dec 24, 2008 6:20 AM

DeShawn Stevenson volunteered to end his 275 game starting streak for the benefit of the Washington Wizards, the Associated Press is reporting.

Stevenson, who has started 189 straight games since joining the Wizards for the 2006-07 season, came off the bench Tuesday against the Charlotte Bobcats.

"In a real team gesture he basically told me, 'Tap, I'm struggling a little bit. Why don't you let me come off the bench and see if I can't get my swag back?'" interim coach Ed Tapscott said.

The move didn't exactly pay off. Stevenson scored only three points in 26 minutes off the bench as the Wizards lost 80-72. But Tapscott appreciated the gesture.

"He's a real team-oriented guy," Tapscott said.

Wizards' Stevenson Asks To Be Reserve

Dec 23, 2008 9:29 AM

Wizards' guard DeShawn Stevenson has asked to be brought off the bench, a move that would end the NBA's second-longest active starting streak.

Stevenson, who has started 275 consecutive games, approached Washington's interim coach Ed Tapscott before practice on Monday and suggested a change.

He is shooting a career-low 31.7 percent from the field.

"In a real team gesture he basically told me, 'Hey Tap, I'm struggling a bit, why don't you let me come off the bench and see if I can't get my swag back going against some second-line guys,' " Tapscott said of Stevenson. "I thought it an enormously gracious thing to say. And so, we're looking at different combinations with the lineup, whether big or small, and let DeShawn go with the second unit for a while. He's the ultimate team guy, and that's why I have so much respect for him."
