Heat Unlikely To Extend Bam Adebayo To Preserve 2021 Cap Space

Jul 27, 2020 4:51 PM

Bam Adebayo is eligible for a contract extension this offseason as part of the 2017 draft class, but that is highly unlikely to happen due to the plans of the Miami Heat to preserve cap space for 2021. The Heat have interest in pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo and Victor Oladipo during the 2021 offseason.

"He's not going to get a max contract in the offseason," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "Even though I think he should, because the Heat are going to save money for the 2021 summer. That's a storyline that I can almost guarantee for you: Bam Adebayo will not sign a contract extension this offseason.

"It will be, 'Bam, we'll take care of you later.'"

Adebayo's cap hold in 2021 will almost certainly be less than what he would receive as part of an extension. Adebayo would become a restricted free agent, which would allow the Heat to match any offer he receives.

DeMar DeRozan Hasn't Thought About $27.7M Player Option For 20-21

Jul 20, 2020 9:15 PM

Shortly before the NBA suspended its season, Yahoo! Sports reported DeMar DeRozan intended to decline his $27.7 million player option for the 20-21 season with the San Antonio Spurs to become a free agent unless he were to sign an extension before then.

DeRozan was asked to assess the potential of his free agency with the NBA about to restart the 19-20 season.

“I haven’t thought about it,” DeRozan said. “With everything that’s going on, it’s hard to even know what tomorrow is going to bring, honestly. So, you’ve got to worry about the moment that you are in. I told myself that throughout this whole process, through everything, I am going to take it day by day. My goal here is to get these young guys ready, and get us ready, to go out there and be ready to play.”

The salary cap is widely expected to decrease for the 20-21 season as the NBA faces a probable reduction in revenues.

The 26-year-old was also named to the Western Conference Midseason All-NBA G League Team in February.  Uthoff saw limited action in four games with the Memphis Grizzlies after signing a 10-day contract on Feb. 27.

Warriors To Prioritize Backup Point Guard In Offseason

Jul 16, 2020 1:33 PM

The Golden State Warriors will prioritize the backup point guard position this offseason, according to sources.

The Warriors lost Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston and Quinn Cook last offseason, which effectively eliminated their backup point guards behind Stephen Curry.

Draymond Green will continue to handle the ball and Andrew Wiggins will also initiate the offense.

Anthony Slater of The Athletic mentions Michael Carter-Williams as a potential target. Carter-Williams' game has often been compared to Livington with their length as a ballhandler and lack of perimeter shooting.

The Warriors could also target backup point guard via the draft with LaMelo Ball, Tyrese Haliburton and Killian Hayes all considered high level point guard prospects.

Pelicans Still View Brandon Ingram As Critical Building Block

Jul 15, 2020 2:19 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans wanted to take a wait and see approach on the long-term future of Brandon Ingram when they discussed an extension.

Ingram underwent thoracic outlet decompression surgery in his right arm.

"I couldn't do anything but respect it," Ingram said at the time.

Sources say the Pelicans' front office continues to view Ingram as a critical building block going forward. Ingram and Lonzo Ball were traded to the Pelicans this past offseason.

"We're going to continue to work from that vantage point because they've been very, very clear in their desires to continue their careers here," David Griffin said.

Ingram insists contract issues aren't on his mind as the season returns. Ingram will be a restricted free agent.

"That's more for after the season," Ingram said. "This season, I was so focused on being with my teammates and just playing basketball after being out the way last year went when I couldn't finish the season. This year was about me just going out and showing where I belong and excel in this new space. I think playing in this could help me out."

Bucks Have 'Zero' Concern About Potential Recruiting Of Giannis Antetokounmpo Within Bubble

Jul 14, 2020 10:46 AM

The Milwaukee Bucks aren't concerned about the possibility of players from rival teams trying to recruit Giannis Antetokounmpo during the NBA's restart within the bubble.

"Zero," said Jon Horst. We can only control what we can control. If it's considered tampering or recruiting or whatever it is, in our league people talk, people are connected, people have relationships. At the end of the day, I have full confidence in my personal relationship, our league's relationship, our coach's relationship, his teammate's relationship with Giannis in what we're doing and what we're about.

"I think that separated us and we're going to continue to be above that and not worry about that. We can only worry about what we can control, to be the best that we can, to have the best organization of support and success as possible, and that's really where our energy and our focus is. Also, just as a funny kind of side note, I think that technically violates the social distancing rules and I think everyone is getting tracked for that, so I think we'll be OK that way as well."

Antetokounmpo becomes eligible to sign a supermax contract extension this offseason and would otherwise become a free agent in 2021.

The Brooklyn Nets have agreed to sign Donta Hall for the remainder of the season.

The Nets are severely shorthanded for the NBA's restart and have signed a number of replacement players.
