O'Neill Reinstated After Altercation With Booster

Mar 13, 2011 2:16 PM

USC has reinstated coach Kevin O’Neill as coach of the Trojans after a one-game suspension involving a verbal altercation involving him, his wife and a Wildcats booster at the team hotel a night earlier.

Athletic director Pat Haden believes the suspension served its purpose and will eliminate any such inappropriate behavior by O'Neill in the future.

O'Neill was suspended for USC's semifinal game against Arizona on Saturday in the Pac-10 tournament.

Arizona beat USC, 67-62, putting the Trojans on the edge for a bid in the NCAA tournament.

Perry Jones Declared Ineligible

Mar 9, 2011 9:17 PM

Baylor freshman forward Perry Jones III has been declared ineligible for a pre-enrollment amateurism violation/preferential treatment, school officials announced before the Bears were to take the floor to face Oklahoma in the opening round of the 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. This is not considered to be an institutional violation of NCAA rules.

Baylor University was informed of the NCAA's decision on Jones III on Wednesday afternoon and immediately appealed to have his eligibility reinstated.

"We are profoundly disappointed in the timing and determination in this matter," said Baylor Director of Athletics Ian McCaw. "This outcome appears to be inconsistent with other recent, widely discussed NCAA decisions."

Jones III had no knowledge of three, 15-day loans between his mother and AAU coach that were provided while Jones III was in high school. The loans were repaid in a timely manner, according to interviews conducted by Baylor officials and the NCAA staff. Prior to his enrollment at Baylor, Jones' AAU coach also paid for Jones' travel to a professional pre-season football game in San Diego, Calif.

McCaw indicated that Baylor has been cooperative and transparent in working with the NCAA through this process, and that no Baylor representatives were involved or aware of any preferential treatment between the AAU coach and Jones' family, whose relationship dates to at least the sixth grade.

"Perry is to be commended for being cooperative and forthcoming during this unfortunate process," McCaw said

Jones III, a finalist for the 2011 Wayman Tisdale Award given to the nation's top freshman, earned second-team All-Big 12 honors and leads all Big 12 freshmen in both scoring (13.9 ppg) and field goal percentage (.549).

BYU Athletic Director Says Davies Will Return After Suspension, Counseling

Mar 5, 2011 1:30 PM

The suspension of BYU sophomore center Brandon Davies from the No. 3-ranked BYU basketball team Tuesday has sparked a firestorm of attention to the school’s honor code. In an interview Friday, BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe indicated how much he wants to help Davies return to the team after he serves his suspension and undergoes counseling.

"We're doing everything we can to kind of come in and rescue him and get him back on track," Holmoe said.

"People say, 'Boy, that must have been a hard decision.' No, it wasn't really a hard decision because we've dealt with issues in the past. It was a gut-wrenching decision because of course you have a young man that is going to have to put his career on hold for a little bit.

"Our desire is to try to get him back in full academic standing and full team capacity. That's a year from now, but right now that's where our focus of attention is on our priority to do everything we can to bring him back and help him be part of our team."

According to a source, Brandon Davies was dismissed from BYU's basketball team after admitting to having sexual relations with his girlfriend.

BYU has a school-wide honor code in which that is a violation.

BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said Davies’ suspension from the team was for the remainder of the season and that his future at the school has yet to be determined.

A source told The Tribune that Davies is “extremely remorseful, heartbroken” but has accepted the punishment.

Davies was averaging 11.1 points, third-most on Dave Rose's team, and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds per game for BYU.

The Cougars are currently the No. 3 team in the country.
