Emoni Bates Widley Expected To Choose G League Over Michigan State Before NBA Draft

Mar 3, 2021 11:14 AM

Emoni Bates committed to Michigan State in the incoming class of 2022 and is projected to be the top overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, but he may instead go straight to the G League.

"Of all the sources interviewed for this story, those existing in and out of the Bates camp, no one seems to believe Emoni will play at Michigan State," writes Brandon Quinn at The Athletic. "Instead, Bates most likely will wait for a professional contract, probably the most lucrative deal the G League can muster, and turn professional before heading to the NBA."

Tom Izzo was unaware of Bates' decision to commit to Michigan State until the day before his announcement. The Bates family, however, knew for months they'd commit to Michigan State.

“As of now, everything still stands as it was,” E.J. Bates says, wearing a knowing smile. “Kids are kids, and kids make decisions all the time. Michigan State is still the place that he loves. They embraced him. They showed him love and they continue to show him love. They’ve always been good to him, so I don’t see a switch up or anything. Now, if things change, or some rules change, you know — who knows? Because Michigan State, that’s one dream. The NBA is another dream. I don’t know. At the end of the day, it’s Emoni’s decision on what he wants to do.”

"This decision was based off wanting to maximize my opportunity to be coached by the best coach in the game in Tom Izzo and reach my dreams and full potential," Henry told ESPN. "I wanted to put myself in the best situation possible and not rush anything to make sure I start my career on the right foot. This was a tough decision, but year three will be the year."

Tom Izzo 'Sought Out' Witness To Alleged Sexual Assault Involving Player

Apr 2, 2020 11:41 AM

Tom Izzo and two assistant coaches contacted a witness in a 2017 investigation of criminal sexual conduct involving a basketball player before the witness had discussed the incident with police or school investigators.

MSU student Brayden Smith was with then-freshman guard Brock Washington on the night a female student said Washington forcibly groped her.

On Aug. 31, 2017, the female student told police that Washington grabbed her butt without her consent, tried to pull her to the floor despite her telling him no, reached toward her vagina and kissed her without her consent, according to the Michigan State University police report.

When police officers interviewed Smith about what he had seen that night in August 2017, he said he had already been contacted by Izzo and assistant coaches Dwayne Stephens and Mike Garland about the incident. They "asked [Smith] if he was OK and if there was anything that he had seen during the evening," according to the report. Smith made a similar statement to a Michigan State Title IX investigator: "Mr. Smith said he was sought out by Mr. Izzo and other members of the basketball coaching staff. Mr. Smith said they asked him what he knew and if he was OK," according to the Title IX report. Smith, who was not present for most of the interactions between Washington and the woman, told police that what he saw he thought was consensual.
