The NBA has sent a memo to all 30 teams on Friday indicating that the one-and-done rule could be eliminated as early as 2021.
The memo does not mention the one-and-done rule by name, but it is meant to remind teams the league and the players union could agree to scrap one-and-one before the expiration of the current collective bargaining deal in 2024.
The first draft in which the rule is changed will surely be loaded with the best prospects from two straight high school classes.
The memo serves as something of an advisory to teams who might think about trading away future first-round picks in the lead-up to Thursday's draft.
The league instituted the one-and-done rule in 2005, but it has since been met with criticism on many sides of the issue.
The league will discuss the issue further during annual meetings at Summer League in Las Vegas, the memo says.
Deandre Ayton hopes to be the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, which will be a culmination of the work he's put into the game of basketball since arriving in the United States at the age of 12 from the Bahamas.
"Home, I was perfect," said Ayton. "I was home. I don't even want to talk about AAU. AAU was a bunch of s---. When I stepped foot in the United States, my life became a job."
Ayton moved to San Diego as a 6'5" 12-year-old and was 6'10" less than two years later. Ayton first landed on the radar of scouts at the 2011 Jeff Rodgers Camp in Nassau.
"It felt normal," Ayton says, "until I grew up and realized I never really had a childhood. It was just basketball and business. Never went to Disneyland or any of that. Kids used to tell me about it, and I'd have to lie and say, 'Yeah, I went.' But I never never knew any of that."
Ayton lived with three different host families over the next few years and spent most weekends traveling with the grassroots hoops circuit.
"There were a lot of issues going on," he says. "Sometimes I'd go a month without talking to my mother. You're [in the gym] going 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. It was like a job."
Ayton's mother moved to Phoenix when Deandre was 16.
John Beilein has removed his name from consideration for the Detroit Pistons' head coaching job.
Beilein somewhat surprisingly emerged as a candidate following the firing of Stan Van Gundy.
Beilein has never worked in the NBA.
"I love the University of Michigan and I am excited about coaching our Men’s Basketball Team next season and in the years to come ! Let’s go hang some more banners at 'THE GREATEST UNIVERSITY IN THE WORLD,'" wrote Beilein on Twitter.

The Detroit Pistons have interviewed John Beilein for their head coaching vacancy.
Beilein has been head coach of Michigan since 2007 and has led the school to the Final Four in 2013 and 2018.
The Pistons are searching for a head coach to replace Stan Van Gundy.
