Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Uncertainty Freezes NBA Activity Ahead Of Draft

Jun 12, 2026 11:50 AM

The Milwaukee Bucks have exhibited a heightened urgency to reach a trade involving Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of the NBA draft on Tuesday, June 23rd, sources tell ESPN. Co-owner Jimmy Haslam went on the record indicating that the Bucks planned to trade Antetokounmpo by the draft if he didn't firmly commit his future to the Bucks. Because of Antetokounmpo's still to be determined trade status, other teams are in a holding pattern on their own offseason plans.

"It seems like everyone else's business is on hold until we see what happens with Giannis," said an East scout.

The Bucks trading Antetokounmpo is still not guaranteed. Moving a superstar on a large contract is difficult under the NBA's current apron rules, and Milwaukee carries dead money on its books through the end of the decade while holding minimal future draft capital.

Those factors could make a player-focused return package more appealing to the Bucks. Recent changes to draft lottery rules add further complexity to any potential negotiation.

What Milwaukee requires in a deal, and whether Antetokounmpo will publicly declare a preferred destination and signal he would only sign an extension with that team remain unanswered questions. Sources say the Miami Heat retain strong interest and would be the primary beneficiary of that scenario.

Antetokounmpo has consistently declined to publicly request a trade or name preferred destinations in recent years, and that posture is not expected to shift.

Miami can offer a package built around All-Star guard Tyler Herro, a Wisconsin native, alongside younger players including Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis. Should the Cleveland Cavaliers or Orlando Magic enter the bidding, both could potentially surpass Miami's offer if players such as Evan Mobley or Paolo Banchero are made available.

The Boston Celtics have resurfaced in trade rumors involving Antetokounmpo this week.

Blazers, Rockets, Hawks Among Teams With Potential Jaylen Brown Trade Interest

Jun 12, 2026 7:44 PM

The Boston Celtics have emerged with potential trade interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo, which would almost certainly mean Jaylen Brown would be outgoing to team beyond the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks have been three teams typically broached as having interest in Brown should he become available. Brown will turn 30 in October and has $183 million over the next three seasons remaining on his existing contract.

Brown is coming off the best season of his career as he led the Celtics to the second best record in the Eastern Conference despite playing most of the season without Jayson Tatum.

If the Bucks trade Antetokounmpo to the Celtics, they're not expected to have interest in keeping Brown for themselves as they're prioritizing future draft capital and young players as they rebuild with the trade of their two-time MVP.

The Blazers own multiple future draft picks originating with the Bucks, which puts them in a unique position to participate in an Antetokounmpo trade.

The Rockets would afford Brown an opportunity to reunite with his former head coach in Ime Udoka.

Brown is also a native of Atlanta, which have created links to the Hawks over the years.

Rich Paul Says 10-12 Teams Have Interest In LeBron James

Jun 13, 2026 10:05 AM

In a recent appearance on The Pat McAffee Show, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports said that "10-12 teams" have interest in LeBron James ahead of free agency. However, Paul cautioned that doesn't mean anything is actually happening with James' impending free agency.

"Believe nothing that's out there because I haven't had one conversation with him," Paul said about discussing free agency with the Los Angeles Lakers superstar.

James is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka says that the team hopes to bring James back for his 24th NBA season and ninth season in Los Angeles.

If the Lakers do not re-sign James, they could have nearly $50 million in cap space this offseason. That would go a long way towards a team resetting their roster around Luka Doncic and a presumably re-signed Austin Reaves.

Teams linked to James in free agency have been the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. With the Warriors, James would team up with Stephen Curry to chase a title. A move to the Cavaliers would bring James back full circle to where his career began in Cleveland. To sign with either the Cavs or the Warriors, the NBA's all-time leading scorer would likely have to take a significant pay cut. Neither team projects to have any kind of meaningful spending power this offseason beyond the Non-Taxpayer or Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception.

Pelicans 'Want A Lot' For Trey Murphy III With Pacers, Pistons Among Interested Teams

Jun 12, 2026 7:50 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans have received considerable trade interest in Trey Murphy III, but the organization has not shopped him. All inquiries have been inbound under general manager Joe Dumars, but this does mark the first time the franchise has genuinely entertained offers for Murphy.

The Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers are among the teams that have expressed interest.

Teams pursuing Murphy, however, have encountered a firm asking price from New Orleans.

"They want a lot," one interested team told ESPN this week.

Murphy is on a four-year, $112 million contract through the 2029 offseason. Murphy will make just $27 million next season. Murphy is represented by Sean Kennedy.

Murphy appeared in 66 games last season and averaged 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 37.9 percent on three-pointers.

2026 NBA Finals Averaging 19.6M Viewers Through Four Games, Most-Watched Since 1998

Jun 12, 2026 7:09 PM

The 2026 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs are averaging 19.6 million viewers through four games, making it the most-watched NBA Finals since 1998 and the most-watched ever on ABC and ESPN combined, according to Nielsen Big Data + Panel. The 1998 Finals featured the Chicago Bulls against the Utah Jazz in a rematch of the previous year's Finals and the last one with Michael Jordan.

Game 4 on Wednesday averaged 20.9 million viewers, the largest NBA Finals Game 4 audience since 1998 and the most-watched Game 4 in ABC history. Viewership peaked at 23.2 million viewers at 11:15 p.m. ET as the Knicks completed their 29-point comeback over the Spurs.

Game 4 viewership rose 123% from the comparable game last year, while the four-game average is up 116% from last year's championship series.

Game 3 drew 23.8 million viewers and peaked at 26.3 million viewers at 11:15 p.m. ET.

Wednesday's broadcast was also the most-watched program of the day across all of television and led all key male and adult demographic categories for June 10.

Wolves Keeping Jaden McDaniels, Joan Beringer Untouchable In Giannis Trade Talks

Jun 12, 2026 2:52 PM

The Minnesota Timberwolves remain interested in a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but have indicated that both Jaden McDaniels and Joan Beringer are off-limits, sources tell The Athletic.

Sources say the Milwaukee Bucks are interested in acquiring a package of McDaniels, Naz Reid, Terrence Shannon Jr. and their two tradable first-round picks (No. 29 in this year’s draft and their 2033 pick). The Wolves also have up to two first-round picks swaps available.

Antetokounmpo has a preference to remain in the Eastern Conference, but the Wolves would offer him an opportunity to pair with another top-10 player in the NBA in Anthony Edwards. It is unclear if Antetokounmpo would be willing to commit to a long-term extension with the Wolves.

Tim Connelly has been consistently aggressive during his tenure with the Wolves beginning with their 2022 trade for Rudy Gobert that accelerated their timeline for contention. Connelly has also pursued trades for Kevin Durant both at the 2025 deadline and again before his trade to the Houston Rockets in June of 2025.

More recently, the Wolves have also been linked with Kyrie Irving and Ja Morant.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Would Sign Extension With Celtics; Bucks Likely To Find 3rd Team For Jaylen Brown

Jun 12, 2026 3:18 PM

Giannis Antetokounmpo has signaled he would sign a four-year, $275 million extension if traded to the Boston Celtics, according to league sources. The Celtics have again become a serious threat to acquire Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, but the question is whether Brad Stevens is prepared to actually pursue the path.

Jaylen Brown is widely expected to be the centerpiece of any outgoing trade package for Antetokounmpo. Rival teams anticipate the Bucks would not retain Brown, instead flipping the 29-year-old forward for younger players and draft picks.

The Heat remain the frontrunner in Antetokounmpo trade talks given their high level of pursuit, with a package built around Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and up to three first-round picks.

The Celtics arguably would offer Antetokounmpo the clearer title path with the opportunity to pair alongside fellow top-10 player Jayson Tatum. Unlike the superstar wing duo of Tatum and Brown, acquiring Antetokounmpo would give the Celtics one of the best players in the league at a position of size especially when projecting out possible matchups in the playoffs against the New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.

On draft night, the Celtics will hold up to four tradeable first round picks and two swaps.

Victor Wembanyama On Spurs' Belief Down 3-1: 'Everybody Knows We Are Going To Do It'

Jun 12, 2026 2:13 PM

Victor Wembanyama says both he and the San Antonio Spurs still have confidence that they will win the 2026 NBA championship despite their 3-1 deficit to the New York Knicks. The Spurs blew a 29-point lead in Game 4 and also had multiple clear opportunities to win both Games 1 and 2 at home. The Knicks are only +8 in the series despite a 3-1 series lead.

Sam Amick of The Athletic was asked about the mindset of the Spurs entering Game 5 and whether they think they're capable of a comeback in the series.

"Absolutely," said Wembanyama. "Everybody thinks, everybody knows, we're going to do it.

I don't know if I agree with you. I feel like we need to isolate that one game and take it one game at a time.

I think it would be a mistake to waste our energy on multiple games. It's one game at a time.

Following the Spurs' Game 4 loss, Wembanyama was asked what was going through his mind.

"I think it's going to go one of two ways," said Wembanyama. "One of two ways. A bad one and a good one.

"The bad one would be giving up. The good one would be getting stronger through this, getting more together. I know this is what we're going to do."

NBA's Second Apron Rules Set To Suppress Free Agency Market This Summer

Jun 12, 2026 2:17 PM

Tightening luxury tax apron restrictions under the 2023 collective bargaining agreement are expected to produce a more cautious free-agency period across the NBA this summer, with teams showing increased restraint heading into what is already a complex market. Sign-and-trades and player options are projected to drive most roster movement rather than traditional cap-space signings.

The 2026 free-agent class features a mix of high-leverage player options, young restricted free agents seeking major paydays, and proven veteran role players. Star guards Trae Young of the Washington Wizards and James Harden of the Cleveland Cavaliers both hold sizable player options and are expected to opt out in pursuit of longer-term deals with their incumbent teams.

Austin Reaves headlines the unrestricted free-agent market. LeBron James, Norman Powell, CJ McCollum, and Mitchell Robinson round out the notables from the unrestricted group, while restricted free agents Jalen Duren and Walker Kessler figure to draw significant outside interest.

Cap-space teams may attempt to leverage restricted free agency to force rivals into difficult financial decisions.

For teams operating near the luxury tax, the mid-level exception remains the primary tool for adding proven talent. Guards Ayo Dosunmu and Quentin Grimes and frontcourt players Kristaps Porzingis and Rui Hachimura are among the targets expected to draw strong mid-level interest.
