Juan Carlos Navarro sustained a foot injury during Spain's tournament-opening win over China on Sunday.
"It was very strong and all of a sudden,'' Spain coach Sergio Scariolo said. "It is nothing related with his former problems. It is a probably a new injury. It is plantar fasciitis, but it is probably in a different place [within the foot].
"He couldn't play. I don't know how many games he will miss.''
Without Navarro, Spain rallied behind Pau Gasol for an 82-70 win over Australia on Tuesday.
"He's not obviously too happy right now because he's injured and he couldn't play today and we don't know exactly when he's going to be able to play,'' said Gasol. "It's not the easiest situation for an athlete to go through during an Olympics.''
Smith, a 6’3” guard, appeared in 44 games last season for BK Prostov in the Czech Republic and averaged 14.8 points and 2.5 assists while shooting 39.3% from three-point territory during league games.
Smith also appeared in two games during EuroCup qualifications and in six games of the EuroChallenge. Smith played for the Celtics during the 2012 Orlando Summer League and averaged 9.2 points while shooting 45.0% from three. Smith was previously with the Celtics during training camp prior to the start of the 2010-11 season. Smith previously played for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League. He played collegiately for the University of Illinois and the University of Southern Indiana.
Andrei Kirilenko feels renewed after playing a 40-game season with CSKA Moscow.
"I would say so,'' said Kirilenko. "We had a pretty good schedule -- we only play twice a week. But I feel I'm ready to play because we had a lot of practices.''
Kirilenko scored 35 points on 14-of-17 shooting to lead Russia to a 95-75 win over Great Britain on Sunday.
"I feel great,'' Kirilenko said. “I'm running like a young deer.”
The Rockets encouraged Jon Diebler to play a second overseas because they have an abundance of wing players.
"(Rockets general manager) Daryl Morey told me they can see him on their roster in the future but this year is not the best time," Diebler’s agent, Lance Young said.
"Jon said he's going to go back to Europe this year and become a better player, and he'll go to training camp with the Rockets next year and make their roster. If he doesn't, he'll become a free agent."
Diebler signed a one-year deal with Pinar Karsiyaka, a team in Izmir, Turkey.
Khalid El-Amin has agreed to a one-year deal with to a one-year deal with Le Mans Sarthe Basket of the French Pro A League.
El-Amin arrives from Cibona, where he averaged 8.6 points and 1.8 assists in 20 Croatian League games this past season.
El-Amin has spent time with Lietuvos Rytas in Lithuania, Budivelnik and Azovmash in Ukraine, Turk Telekom and Besiktas in Turkey, Strasbourg in France, Ramat Gan in Israel, and the Chicago Bulls.
