Hawks Sweep Celtics, Despite 'Hit' Being Put Out On Crawford

Jan 30, 2010 10:52 AM

The Hawks defeated the Celtics 100-91 on Friday night to sweep the season series for the first time since the 1995-96 season.

Prior to the game, Boston coach Doc Rivers paid extra attention on reserve guard Jamal Crawford, who "toasted" the Celtics in the team's three previous games.

"He owns us," Rivers told his team.

"We put a hit out on him today," center Kendrick Perkins said before the game. "Doc said somebody's got to step up and stop him."

Crawford ended up scoring 28 points in Atlanta's victory.

"I was kind of fired up, but I wasn't too worried about it," Crawford said of hearing about the comments by Perkins.

"They can knock me down, and I'll get back up. I know my teammates got my back."

NBA Denies Atlanta's Protest From Cleveland Game

Jan 19, 2010 3:44 PM

The National Basketball Association announced today that Commissioner David Stern has denied the Atlanta Hawks' protest of their 106-101 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Dec. 30, 2009.

In the protest, the Hawks argued that the failure of the shot clock operator to reset the shot clock following a defensive rebound by Atlanta with 1:57 remaining in the game warranted a replay of the game from that point forward.

Commissioner Stern determined that the shot clock error did not have a clear impact on the game's outcome and therefore did not justify the extraordinary remedy of granting the protest and overturning the game's result.

Woodson Doesn't Want To Rush Teague

Jan 19, 2010 7:59 AM

Hawks coach Mike Woodson believes that Jeff Teague is the team's point guard of the future, but the rookie is going to have to wait his turn.

"I don't have to rush Teague," Woodson said. "I've got confidence in Teague. But [Mike] Bibby and Jamal [Crawford] have carried the load at the [point].

"I feel good about Teague and what he brings to the table. Eventually Teague will run this team, I think. But I don't have to throw him to the wolves like I did those other guys."

During his early days in Atlanta, Woodson was forced to play Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and Josh Childress heavy minutes because he didn't have any other choice.

"It's always good to be winning," Teague said. "I know if I was a rookie right now and I was losing every game I would probably be really frustrated and depressed if I wasn't playing.

"But to be on a good team, and learn from really good players and when I do get out there get an opportunity to do my best, it's a blessing."

Jan 16, 2010 8:51 AM

The Hawks drew up a play for an easy basket to force overtime against the Suns on Friday night, but Jamal Crawford had other plans.

Crawford's long three-pointer gave Atlanta a 102-101 win over Phoenix.

"We drew it up to get an easy basket," said Joe Johnson. "Luckily, we were able to get the 3."

The Hawks trailed 100-96 at home with 10 seconds left, but staged a furious comeback.

"I knew I was going for a win," said Crawford. "It felt good. I started backing the other way."

Hawks Now Use 'Nash Rule' Against All Pick-And-Roll Players

Jan 14, 2010 6:11 PM

Two or three years ago, coach Mike Woodson developed what the Hawks call "the Nash rule" to dictate how it would defend Steve Nash on the pick-and-roll.

"He dissected people off the pick-and-roll," Woodson said Thursday. "Nobody knew how to play him, and people still don't know how to play him. We struggle to play him because he's so good at it."

Woodson wouldn't divulge the specifics of it, but said that the team now uses the Nash rule against "anybody that's a pick-and-roll player."
