Sean Marks Signs Four-Year, $9M Deal As GM Of Nets

Feb 20, 2016 11:34 AM

Sean Marks signed a four-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets to be general manager worth $9 million.

Marks earned less than $10 million during his entire 11-year playing career.

"I hope that I can capture all that I've learned and bring it to [Brooklyn], and I have a clear vision of what I'd like to implement here," Marks said. "It'll be built through a solid, strong foundation, a systematic process, and we'll be putting something out there on the court that the community can be proud of.

"The vision is to evaluate immediately, so it'll be evaluating the roster, the staff, the needs, finding out what can be put in in the meantime," Marks added. "By no means is this a wasted year. I think you can still get some things out of this year. We've got some really talented young guys on this team that need to be developed. We've got a culture that needs to be set, and that starts from day one."

Nets Still Expected To Pursue Big Name Head Coach, Free Agents

Feb 18, 2016 11:11 AM

The Brooklyn Nets hired Sean Marks as general manager but they will still seek a big name head coach and free agents in the offseason.

Marks comes from the San Antonio Spurs, who have followed a different path historically, albeit with Tim Duncan as the anchor of the team.

The Nets have previously been linked to Tom Thibodeau and John Calipari. Calipari is less likely to leave Kentucky for the NBA without full control of the basketball operations.

With Marks getting the job, however, the Nets could also pursue Ettore Messina or Ime Udoka.

His background helping to build one of the greatest teams in the NBA gives him an unparalleled frame of reference. And he impressed us all with his vision, his values, his personality and his enthusiasm for the club. The vote to select him from an incredible list of talent was unanimous. “I am very excited to be named the General Manager of the Brooklyn Nets, and to become a member of the vibrant and dynamic organization that represents Brooklyn,” Marks said. "I would like to thank Nets’ ownership for giving me this opportunity, and I look forward to the challenge of creating a unified culture and building a winning team."

Marks joins the Nets after spending the past five years with the San Antonio Spurs, including the last two seasons as the team’s assistant general manager.
