Campbell may be the odd big man out in Detroit

Aug 31, 2004 8:08 AM

With the Piston roster loaded with quality frontcourt players, including free-agent signee Antonio McDyess, veteran center Elden Campbell is reportedly likely to be moved.

Campbell was an integral part of Detroit's championship run, as he was part of the force defending and frustrating Shaquille O'Neal.

A possible destination for Campbell could be the Lakers.  He, like Vlade Divac, began his career in Los Angeles, and the Lakers are in need of help in the frontcourt.

Pistons Pass on Paulding

Aug 30, 2004 5:16 AM

The Pistons have yet to make an offer to their second round pick, Ricky Paulding.  Paulding was a prolific scorer and perimeter marksmen for the University of Missouri, where he played for four years.

Hapoel Jerusalem, an Israeli pro basketball team, was quick to snatch Paulding by offering him an overseas contract.

The Pistons still retain the rights to Paulding if he comes back to the NBA.

The Making of an Empire

Aug 26, 2004 5:13 PM

Complacency is clearly not showing its apathetic head in the Detroit Pistons camp headed by their fearless GM Joe Dumars.

The defending champs, enjoying what many believe to be the best off-season in terms of acquisitions are looking to the future, another championship and beyond.

The Pistons lost a solid bench player in Mehmet Okur, who went to Utah for big dollars.  However, Dumars replaced him with the oft-injured yet highly talented Antonio McDyess, who is a ticking time-bomb of athleticism just waiting to go off again.

They also dealt Corliss Williamson in exchange for Derrick Coleman.  With this move they get a veteran big man close to retirement meaning some money to play with in 2005 that might be used to retain Big Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince.

And, not to ignore their most important move, the long-term contract signing of Rasheed Wallace, the newly remodeled power forward from Portland who was so instrumental in the Pistons dominant playoff run.

With Dumars making all the right moves, the ball is clearly in the Piston?s court?no pun intended.

Delfino Looking For Some Minutes

Aug 25, 2004 7:20 PM

Once considered one of the top players in Europe, Carlos Delfino is learning a new role as a reserve for the Argentina team that he will no doubt assume with the Detroit Pistons next season.

When asked about his future with Detroit, Carlos Delfino the 6-foot-6 swingman said, "I just want to play."

Delfino is only averaging 4.8 points and 13 minutes for his native team.  It should be noted that The Argentinean team is very deep and Delfino did not begin playing with the team until June.

Delfino is packed full of talent, but is coming into the NBA cold.  So cold that the only thing he knew about the Pistons is that they won the championship last year.

Brown Finds One Olympic Player He Likes

Aug 23, 2004 5:41 PM

The wheels are in motion for Tall Blacks captain Pero Cameron to become the next New Zealand player in the elite National Basketball Association (NBA).

Detroit Pistons head coach Larry Brown said Cameron would be invited to attend a training camp with his NBA championship team after the Olympics.

Brown said he intended to sign the 1.98m, 130kg forward.

Brown, head coach with the USA basketball Dream Team in Athens, said he was determined to get the New Zealand and Waikato Titans player to the US for the trial.

"I'm going to do everything in my power to give him a chance to try-out for Detroit. I badly want him to try-out."

New Zealand coach Tab Baldwin approached Brown after the their pre-Olympics warm-up 68-94 loss to the US in Jacksonville, Florida, last month, asking for his opinion on his star player.

"He said to me, I don't understand why he isn't in the NBA. I said, `I don't disagree'."

Little Williamson Likes AI

Aug 21, 2004 10:43 AM

Corliss Williamson's son, Chasen, is happy about his father's trade to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Even if Corliss takes time to adjust to being dealt from the champion Pistons, at least his son is excited.

The 9-year-old boy is a big fan of Allen Iverson.

"(Chasen) was real excited when he found out I got traded," Williamson said. "He asked me where I got traded to and I told him Philadelphia, and he was like 'really?' so he was happy about that."

Corliss knows that he has his work cut out for him playing on a team that did not make the playoffs last year.

"Playing for the 76ers is going to be a challenge because I'm going to a team that didn't make the playoffs last year," Williamson said. "That is going to be tough, but hopefully I can be a big part in a turnaround."

Brown's Style Not Translating to Team USA

Aug 20, 2004 1:08 PM

Don't blame the media for reporting on U.S. basketball's Olympic struggles.

Could it be that the NBA culture of 'entertainment over substance' has spread overseas and is infecting the unity and quality of this U.S. team?

Maybe we should call this 'Team NBA' instead.

Against Australia, the U.S. finally made the extra pass and was able to pull out the win.

The Pistons, led by head coach Larry Brown, showed that teamwork and cohesiveness on the court can succeed in the NBA.  Brown has largely been frustrated instilling the same qualities in his cast of top talent.

But there is no immunity for Brown either.  He too deserves to share in the blame.

Clippers want Moore ex-Pistons

Aug 16, 2004 5:21 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers are expected to sign Utah Jazz free agent center Mikki Moore to a one year contract as early as Tuesday, sources have indicated.

The 7'1" Nebraska product averaged 4.1 points in 32 games with the Jazz and New Jersey Nets last year. He enjoyed the best seasons of his six year career with the Detroit Pistons, including averaging 7.9 points a game during the 1999-2000 season.

Moore has also spent regular season time with the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks, as well as preseason stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs.

Last week, the Clippers added center Zeljko Rebraca to the team. Rebraca and Moore were teammates in Detroit as the team began its ascent into the NBA's upper echelon under then head coach Rick Carlisle.
