The Detroit Pistons have hired George David as an assistant general manager. 

David previously spent 19 seasons with the Pistons before leaving to work on the player representation side with Wasserman in 2015.

David also has a longstanding relationship with Troy Weaver.

The NBA salary cap is projected to increase from $112 million to $119 million from 21-22 to 22-23, but ESPN projects only three teams to have cap space.

The Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs are expected to have a minimum of $30 million in room. The Sacramento Kings could have $22 million in cap space should they let Marvin Begley Jr. walk in free agency.

For comparison, five teams had cap space this offseason and four in 2020.

Hamidou Diallo has re-signed with the Detroit Pistons on a two-year, $10.4 million contract. Diallo was a restricted free agent.

The Pistons acquired Diallo in a midseason trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2021. Diallo had a breakout season in 2020-21 with both Oklahoma City and Detroit. Overall, he averaged 11.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Diallo also improved his shooting to 47.7% from the field and 34.1% from behind the arc.

The re-signing of Diallo brings Detroit to 16 players on fully guaranteed contracts. The Pistons will have to waive or trade at least one fully guaranteed player to get into regular season roster compliance.

The Detroit Pistons have signed rookie Jamorko Pickett to a training camp contract. Pickett signed a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contract. This deal should eventually result in Pickett joining the Pistons G-League team, the Motor City Cruise.

Pickett averaged 12.2 points and 7.2 rebounds in 2020-21 as a senior at Georgetown. He averaged 9.8 points per game for the Pistons at Summer League. Pickett also shot an impressive 50% on three-pointers in Las Vegas.

Luka Garza has agreed to a Two-Way deal with the Detroit Pistons.

Garza had a productive Summer League for the Pistons after he was selected No. 52 in the draft out of Iowa.

Jalen Green worked out for the Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets before the draft and lobbied to be the first overall selection even though he preferred one city over the other. 

“I wanted to be the No. 1 pick, but as for the location, I didn't want to be in Detroit,” Green told Yahoo Sports. “I felt a lot more comfortable in Houston. It felt like a real homey environment. With Detroit, it felt like I was just going back to the G League bubble, and I just got out of the bubble. That’s pretty much what it was.

“In the [G League] bubble, I didn’t really have anything to do but just stay in the gym. I didn’t have any time to get away for myself. The only time I had to get away for myself was in my apartment. That’s what it felt like in Detroit. I wouldn’t be stepping outside in Detroit. There are not many things you can do in Detroit like that. You’re going to stay in the gym and then go back to your apartment.”

Green hopes to become the NBA's Rookie of the Year.

“I need it. I feel like I’m the best player in the class,” Green told Yahoo Sports. “I didn’t go No. 1, so I’m going to go get the Rookie of the Year.”

While Cade Cunningham has one game remaining in Summer League, his PER of 20.9 is one of the highest of a number one overall pick. Cunningham is averaging 18.7 points,5.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 27.7 minutes over three games while shooting 50 percent on three-pointers.

The Detroit Pistons re-signed Rodney McGruder to a one-year contract. McGruder was previously waived by the Pistons before his $5 million contract became fully guaranteed this offseason.

Detroit originally acquired McGruder in the 2020 offseason as part of a three-team trade with the Brooklyn Nets and LA Clippers. In his one season with the Pistons, McGruder had little on-court impact, as Detroit was in the midst of a rebuilding season. McGruder played in just 16 games, but did average 5.7 points on 52.9% shooting, while also knocking down 45.8% from behind the arc.

Frank Jackson has agreed to re-sign with the Detroit Pistons on a two-year deal.

Jackson was a restricted free agent.

In 40 games with the Pistons last season, Jackson averaged 9.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and nearly one assist in 18.5 minutes.

Saben Lee has agreed to re-sign with the Detroit Pistons on a three-year deal.

Saben was the 38th overall pick in 2020 out of Vanderbilt and was a restricted free agent.
