NYC Vaccine Mandate Changes Put Kyrie Irving Closer To Playing In Home Games

Feb 28, 2022 11:01 AM

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said that the city's vaccine mandates will lift on March 7, provided there are no surprises with case numbers over the next week. That puts Kyrie Irving one step closer to being able to play in home games.

However, there is still a private sector mandate in place that would prevent Irving from playing. Essentially, employees who do work in the presence of other employees in the private sector must have at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to work on-site. There hasn't been an indication of when that mandate may change.

Still, with the loosening of some mandates, it appears Irving is closer to being able to play in Nets home games. Brooklyn recently announced that newly acquired forward Ben Simmons is going to continue to be out as he rehabs a back injury. Kevin Durant also remains out, as he recovers from a knee injury.

Ben Simmons Suffering From Back Soreness In Reconditioning Process

Feb 27, 2022 7:59 AM

The Brooklyn Nets have yet to set a timetable for Ben Simmons to make his debut for the team as he is dealing with back soreness as part of his reconditioning process.

Simmons hasn't played in a game since Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2021.

The Nets are treating Simmons' condition as a day-to-day process. Simmons may not debut in time to play in Brooklyn's March 10th game at the Philadelphia 76ers.

Kevin Durant Could Return From Sprained MCL Next Week

Feb 26, 2022 4:17 PM

Kevin Durant continues to make progress in his rehab from a sprained left MCL and his return to the floor will happen at some point in the next week.

"Every day closer," Nash said after shootaround before Saturday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks. "We'll see. I expect in the next week he'll be back for sure. It could be quick; it could be the whole week barring any setbacks."

Durant has been out since suffered the injury on Jan. 15.

"I think with Kevin he's been a great healer throughout his career," Nash said. "So the No. 1 thing is to get him back healthy and feeling secure in his health and his body so he can move and be free. When he's back, obviously he adds a ton to our team on both ends of the floor ... one of the greatest scorers of all time. And we also know he helps us defensively; he gives us more size and length. So he's a big miss for us, and whenever he gets back, he'll impact our team."

Seth Curry: Ben Simmons Doesn't Need To Apologize To Anybody

Feb 24, 2022 4:30 PM

Seth Curry believes Ben Simmons will be fine settling in with the Brooklyn Nets and also indicated he doesn't believe Simmons need to apologize to anybody.

"Business is business," Curry told ESPN after Thursday's shootaround. "I said from day [one], even when he was out early in the season, people were asking me if I feel like, if Ben comes back, should he apologize to us or whatever? I understand the business; he doesn't need to apologize to anybody. When he's on the court, I know he's going to do his job and he's going to do what he does. So I understand the business. He was doing what he felt was best for himself business-wise and personal-wise.

"And the team's going to do the same thing as far as making trades or whatever, so I understand it, I've been around it; I don't take anything personal. When we're on the court, we're teammates. Everything's fine. And we depend on each other to do good things. There's been nothing negative he's done to me personally, so I'm fine."

Danny Green revealed on a podcast that the relationship between Curry and Simmons wasn't "cordial."

"The relationship was fine," Curry said. "He wasn't around. So I don't know what [Green] meant by that. 'Wasn't cordial,' I don't know what that means, but the relationship was fine. He just wasn't around so we didn't see him a lot or we didn't talk a lot. But as far as now, he's on my [team]. I went to battle with him last year, we did a lot of good stuff and I'm going to go to war with who I'm going to go to war with and who's on my team, so I'm looking forward to getting back out there with him and doing good stuff."

Steve Nash: Kyrie Irving 'Getting Excited' To Possibly Play In Every Game

Feb 23, 2022 4:56 PM

Steve Nash said there is a renewed optimism from Kyrie Irving that he will be allowed to play in home games as New York City is expected to lift its vaccination mandates.

"I will say that he's been extremely locked in," Nash said after Wednesday's practice. "Kyrie's been great on the practice floor. He's been great in film sessions. He's been creating dialogue over aspects of our play. So I sense a real focus and urgency from him. And so if that's any indication, I would say he is getting excited at the prospect of being allowed to play in all our games and hopefully in the short term."

Nash was pleased when he was briefed on Adams' comments, but the Nets remain in a holding pattern as to when the reversal may finally come down.

"It's great, obviously," Nash said. "It would be great for us to have Kyrie available for all our games. Having said that, it's not really in our control so we'll leave it up to the Mayor and wait patiently."

Irving went through Wednesday's practice, but the Nets declined to make him available for comment.
