NBA Denies Knicks' Protest From Loss To Rockets On February 12

Feb 29, 2024 12:47 AM

The NBA denied the New York Knicks' protest following a 105-103 loss to the Houston Rockets on February 12.

The game ended with Jalen Brunson being called for a foul on Aaron Holiday with 0.3 seconds left in the fourth, with Holiday hitting two-out-of-three free throws to win the game.

After the game, crew chief Ed Malloy admitted that Brunson should not have been called for a foul.

“Under the standard for NBA game protests, New York was required to demonstrate that there was a misapplication of the official playing rules. As opposed to an error in judgement by game officials. Because the foul call at issue reflected an error in judgement, New York did not demonstrate a misapplication of the playing rules, and the extraordinary remedy of upholding a game protest was not warranted," said the NBA in a statement.

OG Anunoby To Be Re-Evaluated Next Week, Julius Randle Injury Situation Remains 'Fluid'

Feb 26, 2024 1:07 AM

OG Anunoby remains on schedule to return from elbow surgery and has not experienced any setbacks, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Anunoby will be re-evaluated at the end of next week and could return to the Knicks lineup soon after.

Wojnarowski adds that Julius Randle's injury recovery from shoulder surgery remains "fluid."

"His inclination is to play, and it is to play even hurt and in some discomfort. That's his goal right now — to try and get back and play and put anything off until the offseason. But that's still fluid, that's not been fully decided," said Wojnarowski.

Jalen Brunson Details Trying To Sign Extension With Mavericks Two Separate Times

Feb 22, 2024 1:35 PM

Jalen Brunson talked on the All The Smoke podcast about his efforts to sign a contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks multiple times before and even during the 21-22 season.

"There was a chance," said Brunson on staying with the Mavericks. "I really did want to stay in Dallas. I think before the season, before my fourth season in Dallas, last season in Dallas, we tried to extend our contract. Whatever we can get... the most we could get was like four years and $55 million. Obviously, we wanted to do that and I wanted to stay there. I thought I'd be there for a long time and I liked my role there.

"It's funny, because my agent was like, 'You can get more, you can more.'

"I'm saying 'Well, I just want to be safe. I'm not trying to gamble right now. This is not something you really gamble with if it's out there.

"But they were like, 'We went to see where we're at by like 20, 25 games into the season.'

"But were like, well, if we're not going to do it, I kind of don't want to do it until after the season. I'm not trying to think about this during the season.

"So there's a period where Luka [Doncic] went out and I started to start. I was playing really well. I think I was averaging like 20 and 6 maybe. It was about that 20 to 25 mark. And so we went back, like 'If the deal is there, we're thinking about it, like, I'll do it like right now.'

"Still, it was no. It wasn't a hard no. It was just like 'We want to see, we want to see.'

"The trade deadline comes, I'm like thinking if I'm not getting extended, I'm probably going to get traded...

"The deal came on the table after the trade deadline. I was like 'No, I think I've outgrown that now. Personally, that what I thought. 'I think I've outgrown that.'"

Brunson emerged into an even bigger role when Doncic was injured at the start of the playoffs.

"So we lose in the Western Conference Finals, I remember seeing something on Twitter after the game and it was like Mark [Cuban] saying 'Hey, we can pay him the most money.'

"So, he says that in the interview. Literally right after the game.

"I'm thinking, like, I'm okay. I just.. After that, it was crickets. From my point of view, I can't speak to anyone else, and my agents, from my point of view it was crickets."

Brunson went on to sign with the New York Knicks on a four-year, $104 million deal.

Julius Randle Showing 'Positive Progression' During Rehab, Optimism For Return This Season

Feb 16, 2024 1:40 AM

Julius Randle is showing "positive progression" as he rehabs a dislocated shoulder, reported Ian Begley of SNY.

Begley adds that the Knicks are gaining optimism that he could potentially return this season.

“I’ve heard during this period that there’s been some positive progression here during the rehab and I think that’s left people with even more reason to be optimistic that Randle will be back at some point this season,” said Begley.

Randle will undergo 2-3 more weeks of rehab. Both parties will then make a decision as to whether Randle will return or have surgery and miss the season.

Knicks File Protest Disputing Loss To Rockets

Feb 14, 2024 1:35 AM

The New York Knicks are filing a protest with the NBA to dispute their 105-103 loss to the Houston Rockets on Monday.

Officials acknowledged that a foul against Jalen Brunson at the end of the game should not have been called.

Aaron Holiday, who was originally judged to have been fouled by Brunson, hit two-out-of-three free throws to win the game.

The two teams are not scheduled to play again this season. The Knicks are hoping that either the game restarts with overtime or they are not penalized with a loss.

A protest must prove a "misapplication" of a rule, not just a missed call.

Only six protests have been upheld in league history.

Officials Say They Got Call Wrong At End Of Knicks-Rockets

Feb 13, 2024 7:50 AM

The New York Knicks had staged a comeback to tie their Monday game against the Houston Rockets at 103. After a scramble play, Jalen Brunson was called for a foul against Aaron Holiday. The Rockets guard hit two-of-three free throws to give Houston a 105-103 victory.

The only problem? The foul on Brunson shouldn't have been called.

Crew Chief Ed Malloy admitted the mistake in a postgame pool report interview. Malloy said that during live action, it appeared that there was illegal lower-body contact. Upon a postgame review, Malloy said that wasn't the case.

"After seeing it during postgame review, the offensive player was able to return to a normal playing position on the floor. The contact which occurred after the release of the ball therefore is incidental and marginal to the shot attempt and should not have been called," Malloy said.
