Knicks Allow Carmelo Anthony To Decide Playing Status With Injured Knee

Dec 29, 2014 1:04 AM

Derek Fisher said Carmelo Anthony is in charge of whether he will play through his injured left knee, which was reaggravated on Sunday.

“Carmelo is a veteran player that I think understands his body and where he is and what he’s capable of doing,” Fisher said. “The nights where it’s known that it’s probably best that he’s not out there, he lets us know. We let him know our feelings and what we think and our opinion but he’s a veteran enough player to make those decisions himself.”

Anthony has received expansive treatment on his knee.

“It’s tough," Anthony said. "It’s tough for me physically. But it’s tough to think about that right now. We have nine guys and seeing J.R. and Shump and Cleanthony in a suit and Amar’e resting, it is hard for me to be sitting down.’’

Derek Fisher Focused On Bigger Picture

Dec 28, 2014 11:19 AM

Derek Fisher is having a tough time in his first season as head coach, but he insists the New York Knicks are taking the longview.

“For me, it’s just the beginning,” said Fisher. “For our team and organization, in terms of what we’re trying to build and where we’re going, it’s just the beginning.”

Fisher went straight from playing to coaching, unlike another Phil Jackson disciple in Brian Shaw. Jackson advised Shaw to get away from the game for a year before trying to become a coach.

“Given time and the right personnel, I think that he’ll get things in order," Shaw said of Fisher. “Phil Jackson has a track record of success, though this is his first time in this role. Once they get the pieces they need and the type of players that they need in that system, I think they’ll be fine.”

“He’s a guy that’s always cool, calm and collected, regardless of what the situation is,” Carmelo Anthony said. “He’s our leader, so if he’s discombobulated, then everybody’s going to be discombobulated. I think he’s doing a great job kind of staying the course and going through the journey with us.”

“It’s tough for him,” Stoudemire said. “He’s coaching a team where most of the guys are on the last year of their deals. So some players are playing for egos, some players are playing for different personal reasons. It’s tough to manage those types of personalities when it comes down to that type of contract structure.”

Amar'e Stoudemire To Sit With Knee Soreness

Dec 27, 2014 6:28 PM

Amar'e Stoudemire has been out with soreness in his right knee.

Stoudemire said he will seek medical attention and have the knee examined when he returns to New York to make sure nothing serious is afoot.

“We got to figure out how it feels and what’s going on,” Stoudemire said on Saturday morning. “I’ll wait to I get back to New York to see what’s going on. I’m sure this week will be a lot of rest and recovery week to see if it calms down and gets better. So when we get back to New York we’ll reevaluate.”

Marc Gasol Not Particularly Looking Forward To Outside Courtship Of Spurs, Knicks, Lakers, Others

Dec 26, 2014 1:04 PM

Marc Gasol admitted he is not particularly looking forward to free agency where he will likely be courted by the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and others.

"I've been already through one," he says of the summer of 2011, when as a restricted free agent he re-signed with the Grizzlies for $58 million over four years, "and I did not especially enjoy it. I don't know how I'm going to feel in July. I really don't. This is the next five years of my life and I'm going to go all in. Whatever team you play for, you've always got to feel like you represent that team, that you've got to play for it. Because that's the way we grew up in Spain. You play for the city. You play for a way of doing things. It's not about you. I do this for them. I play for the city, for the franchise or whatever. You've got to have that pride that comes with it."

The Memphis Grizzlies badly want to keep Gasol and Gasol has stated he wants to remain with the franchise.

"I'm pretty thankful for everything that happened," Gasol said.

Quincy Acy Ejected, Suspended One Game

Dec 26, 2014 12:02 PM

Quincy Acy was ejected from the New York Knicks' loss to the Washington Wizards following his confrontation with John Wall. The NBA has given Acy a one-game suspension.

Wall received a shove from Acy when he had the ball with 5:31 left in the fourth quarter. Wall retaliated with a shove of his own and Acy may have then threw a punch.

Both Acy and Derek Fisher said that Acy did not throw a punch at Wall.

"I didn't throw a punch. I got up and reacted, then I just grabbed him," Acy said.

Acy received a flagrant foul 2 and was ejected from the game.

The league will review Acy's foul and may choose to fine or suspend him.

Iman Shumpert Won't Need Shoulder Surgery

Dec 21, 2014 2:46 PM

Iman Shumpert won't need surgery to repair his injured shoulder.

Shumpert suffered the injury on Dec. 12 and will be reevaluated in a few weeks.

“Yeah, definitely. I wanted to get back on the court as soon as possible. But it’s a healing process,” Shumpert said before Saturday’s 99-90 loss to Phoenix. “It’s a lot better now that it’s back in place. I don’t need any medication or anything for it, just ice.

“It’s not like it’s hurting me walking. I don’t have to use a sling. It’s just all about strengthening the muscle so that it doesn’t pop out again when I return back… They gotta look at it and say that everything is healed up when I go out there and practice and I’m comfortable with getting hit when I get out there.”

Goran Dragic Will 'Definitely' Consider Signing With Knicks

Dec 21, 2014 11:12 AM

Goran Dragic called signing with the New York Knicks a “possibility” in July when he plans to opt out of his contract and test free agency.

The presence of Phil Jackson makes the Knicks more attractive to Dragic.

“Oh yeah, definitely,” said Dragic, who earned All-NBA third-team honors last season. “You know Phil, he was a great coach. He won so many titles and he was coaching so many great players that of course it’s interesting and I would love working with him. Because probably he’s making all the moves — I’m not sure — but he knows what the team needs and what direction the team needs to go. In the past probably, he makes some decisions, who the Lakers bring in and the Chicago Bulls and (he) did an amazing job.”

Dragic said he intends to keep his options open for free agency and isn’t focusing on any single team, though he did repeat the Knicks were an option.

“I think so it’s a possibility, but not just New York,” Dragic said. “I’m a free agent. I want to explore my options but so far I’m really happy in Phoenix. They give me a lot. I like the city. I like the fans and I like the organization, so it’s going to be a tough decision to make, but I’m going to start thinking of that at the end of the season.”

Carmelo Has Been Advised To Rest Knee For Several Weeks

Dec 18, 2014 5:43 PM

Carmelo Anthony has been advised to stop playing for a few weeks due to soreness in his left knee.

"I have multiple people say kind of just shut it down," Anthony said. "Or just take time off. But at the end of the day, it's hard for me to just do that right now in the midst of what's happening with the team and this season. So just trying to be smart about that."

Anthony was hopeful that his knee would feel better with a few more days of treatment and admitted that 'some days are better than others,' as far as the pain in the knee goes. He isn't sure what it would take to finally make the decision to rest it for a while.

"Some days it feels like I can go, some days it feels like I have everything," Anthony said. "The other day it was a little sore in the first half and I didn't have no lift in my shot and in the second half the lift came back a little bit. It's going to be off and on like that."

Phil Jackson Defends Chandler Trade On Twitter

Dec 18, 2014 3:20 PM

Phil Jackson and Chris Sheridan engaged in a spirited discussion on Twitter about the early results of the New York Knicks' trade of Tyson Chandler to the Dallas Mavericks for Jose Calderon, Sam Dalembert and Shane Larkin.

"Here's how new majordomo got hornswaggled in his first big move," wrote Sheridan.

"negative, I'm okay with the Dallas deal. Tyson fits there and our 3 players, Jose, Sam, and Shane are on the court," replied Jackson. "our season got off to a rocky start-injuries-Tyson could not have changed the outcome. Trades are judged in 4-5 year terms."

Sheridan ended the conversation by saying the Knicks' "product is shameful."

Carmelo On Not Signing With Bulls: What's Done Is Done

Dec 18, 2014 1:04 PM

Carmelo Anthony isn't regretting his decision to re-sign with the New York Knicks instead of leaving for the Chicago Bulls.

Anthon chose to remain with the Knicks for five years and $124 million. Chicago only could offer four years at about $74 million, though had Anthony been able to get Knicks president Phil Jackson to do a sign-and-trade, he could have gotten significantly more.

“No, if I start doing that and saying, ‘What if?’ to myself, second-guessing and questioning myself, it won’t be right. For me, mentally, it won’t be right so I will not allow myself to sway towards asking myself ‘What if?’ with this situation or that situation,” Anthony said Wednesday.

“What’s done is done. I kind of don’t look at it, I kind of don’t think about it anymore,” Anthony said. “That’s in the past for me. … As far as now and thinking about that situation, it doesn’t even come close to me thinking about that.”

Anthony hopes the Knicks will be able to eventually get him more help.

“You think about that,” Anthony said of the not-yet-arrived help. “It’s only right that you think about that. I don’t try to put too much thought into what’s going to happen when we still have [55] games left this season. For me to start thinking ahead of what the possibility is this offseason or next season, I just can’t find myself thinking like that [now].

“You just got to believe. I have never been a quitter in my life or in my career. It is something that you got to believe in, that it will happen and have faith that it will happen and stay the course and just know that this is not the situation that I expected, that we expected. There’s nothing that we can do about it as far as what has happened already. We got to focus on tomorrow.”
