Knicks, Nets, Mavs, Hornets Could Conceivably Be Interested In Kobe

Oct 29, 2014 8:25 PM

The New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks and possibly Charlotte Hornets are all teams that could be interested in Kobe Bryant, according to ESPN's Chad Ford.

The Los Angeles Lakers lost Julius Randle for the entire season on opening night and are expected to struggle to make the playoffs. The Lakers also get to keep their 2015 first round pick if it is in the top-5.

The Knicks are an especially interesting possibility due to his connection to Phil Jackson, Derek Fisher and Carmelo Anthony.

The Knicks could include young players like Iman Shumpert and/or Tim Hardaway Jr., along with a 2015 first rounder and they also have the expiring contracts of Amar'e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani.

"I don't think Mitch has much choice but to find ways to lose," one GM told ESPN. "They're going to be bad anyway. You don't want to be just good enough that you lose the pick and still miss the playoffs. I don't think they have the assets to get good enough to make the playoffs and I don't think they have the [expletive] to trade Kobe. It's paradoxical, but right now losing seems like the only way to really get better."

Bryant's contract expires after the 15-16 NBA season.

Knicks Expected To Pursue Marc Gasol In Free Agency

Oct 27, 2014 1:46 PM

The New York Knicks are widely expected to pursue Marc Gasol with cap space in the 2015 offseason.

Phil Jackson coached Pau Gasol with the Los Angeles Lakers and he believes Marc Gasol is the "quintessential center to play in the triangle offense."

Gasol will almost certainly receive max contract offers in the offseason.

Knicks Consider Cutting Travis Outlaw To Keep Travis Wear

Oct 26, 2014 1:29 PM

The New York Knicks are strongly considering parting ways with Travis Outlaw, according to sources.

Outlaw is owed $3 million this season. If the Knicks released him, they would still owe him his full salary.

Travis Wear could be kept if the Knicks part with Outlaw to create an open roster spot.

Wear, whom the Knicks signed to a non-guaranteed deal, impressed the team in training camp and the preseason.

Jackson: Carmelo Is Knicks' Only 'Certified All-Star', Bargnani Will Thrive In Triangle

Oct 22, 2014 11:54 AM

Phil Jackson candidly spoke with Charley Rosen about the entire New York Knicks' roster.

"Carmelo Anthony is obviously the team's only certified All-Star," said Jackson. "It's also no secret that Melo has to keep the ball moving, but he's committed to doing this. Passing has never been a great strength of his, but in the triangle he'll be able to have check-off reads like a quarterback looking for his first-option receiver, then his second and then his third. There'll be plenty of iso opportunities for Melo, and in the triangle it'll be very difficult for defenses to double-team him. It won't be like last season where he had to take clutch shots with a gang of defenders in his face. Also look for Melo to get a bunch of post-up looks."

Jackson is optimisic that Andrea Bargnani can have a productive season.

"If Andrea Bargnani's initial season in New York was a disappointment, I believe he'll thrive in the triangle. The 3-point shot is a bit out of his range, but from 20 feet and in, Andrea is a deadly shooter. And those are the kinds of shots that the offense will generate for him. Still, there are two aspects of his offense that he has to work on. Because he only approaches the rim in straight lines, he needs to develop some kind of change-of-direction move with the ball -- perhaps a crossover dribble. Also, he's a finger-roller, not a dunker. Could he have small hands? Or does he just need to be more aggressive?

"Bargnani's defense likewise needs improvement. With his long arms, he can be an effective shot-blocker, but he's usually too reactive on defense. In the past, Andrea has been slow getting back in transition defense, and once there he's been unsure of what his rotation responsibilities have been. And like Amar'e, Andrea has to see which of the frontcourt positions suits him best."

Knicks Evaluating Other Options At PF In Bargnani's Continued Absence

Oct 19, 2014 10:28 PM

The continued absence of Andrea Bargnani with a strained hamstring will allow the New York Knicks further opportunities to evaluate other options at power forward.

“He hasn’t been able to practice the last few days so it wouldn’t be smart to jeopardize him by putting him into game action tomorrow,” Derek Fisher said of Bargnani after the Knicks practiced for the fourth straight day Sunday in Greenburgh. “We’ve mixed the groups up a lot and we have some different guys in the frontcourt at times, different guys in the backcourt, so we’ll kind of reassess who has been effective this week and try to put a good lineup together.”

Quincy Acy has started the past three contests, but Fisher indicated Saturday that Jason Smith also is pushing for a starting spot.

“Anytime you have a big guy who can shoot mid-range, or really help and space the defense out, it’s gonna be great, especially with this offense. It’s just gonna help our team that much more,” said Smith, a free-agent signee who played the past four seasons for New Orleans. “It doesn’t matter who's starting out there, if it’s Q or if it’s Andrea or if it’s Amar’e (Stoudemire) or if it’s me, all of us are capable of going out there and playing good minutes.

“And then on the back end of that, coming off the bench, we’re still capable of putting in good minutes. We just want to make sure we go out there and play hard and play within the offense and play smart.”
