Bryon Russell, a 13-year veteran coming off a knee injury in the preseason, is still in talks with the Sonics about his status.
"He was the consummate professional. I talked to him on the phone and told him, 'Hey, to get the deal done, you had to be in the deal. I don't want you to catch a flight and fly to Seattle if it's not a good situation for you,' " general manager Rick Sund said.
Sonicscentral.com has learned that Robert Swift is expected to return to practice tomorrow and be available to play in Seattle?s next game on Tuesday.
Swift has missed the last 4 games with a broken nose. He underwent successful surgery and was fitted with a protective mask over the weekend.
The Seattle SuperSonics' intentions to move to San Jose are serious, but the league remains opposed to putting another team in Golden State's neighborhood.
San Jose played host to the Warriors for one season in the late-90's while the Oakland Arena was being remodeled. It is the biggest city in the San Francisco Bay Area and has had success supporting the Shark of the NHL.
Danny Fortson has told the Sonics that he has been advised by doctors not to play again this season, the Seattle Times is reporting.
Fortson told the Sonics that he has had at least two doctors examine a knee that began giving him problems as early as training camp, which was largely responsible for him being out of shape at the start of the season.
"I don't anticipate him doing much for us on the floor this year," Seattle head coach Bob Hill said.
The Seattle SuperSonics announced today they have acquired Earl Watson, Bryon Russell and a 2008 second-round draft pick from the Denver Nuggets in a four-team, nine-player trade including Portland and Sacramento.
As part of the deal, Denver will receive Seattle?s Reggie Evans and Portland?s Ruben Patterson and Charles Smith. In addition, Seattle?s Vitaly Potapenko and Portland?s Sergei Monia will join Sacramento while Denver?s Voshon Lenard and Sacramento?s Brian Skinner head to Portland.
?We drafted Earl in 2001 after his solid career at UCLA, and it will be great to have him back with the Sonics,? said Sonics General Manager Rick Sund. ?With his talent, we?ll have a good flow at the point-guard position. We thank Reggie and Vitaly for their hard work over the past few years and wish them the best of luck in Denver and Sacramento.?
The Seattle SuperSonics announced today they have acquired guard Mike Wilks and cash considerations from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for guard Ronald ?Flip? Murray.
?In an attempt to help Flip Murray with his request to be traded, we?ve acquired Mike Wilks,? said Sonics General Manager Rick Sund. ?He?s got a solid work ethic and this will give us a chance to further evaluate his skills. We?re happy that Flip will have the opportunity to continue to grow as a player in Cleveland.?
The Seattle Supersonics completed two trades on Thursday afternoon, acquiring Earl Watson, Bryon Russell, Mike Wilks and a second-round draft pick.
The Sonics have been discussing acquiring Watson, a former Sonic, for several months and ended up getting him in a four-team trade.
Seattle acquired Watson, Russell and a second-round pick from Denver. Denver received Reggie Evans, Charles Smith and Ruben Patterson. Sacramento Sergei Monia and Vitaly Potapenko and Portland received Brian Skinner and Voshon Lenard.
Don't expect any blockbuster deals from the Nuggets, according to the Denver Post.
With Steve Francis and Penny Hardaway's contract both off the market, Kenyon Martin wont be going anywhere, not that he ever was according to Kiki Vandeweghe. Vandeweghe said Martin "absolutely" would stay, adding, "Kenyon was never going anywhere."
Watson, however, most likely will be done, and while Seattle is the most likely destination don't rule out a trade with the Knicks for Jamal Crawford or ''a dark horse team'', as the Post phrases it.
The Post also reveals that Voshon Lenard should receive his wish to be traded to a new team before the deadline passes today, and the Nuggets have been actively chasing Portland character Ruben Patterson, who believes his time with the Blazers is up.
"I don't want to put my mind on something and then be disappointed. So I'm open-minded for whatever situation happens over the next 24 hours. ... I'm ready for a role, a defined role on a team," said Watson.
It may be no coincidence that Reggie Evans, Vitaly Potapenko and Flip Murray didn?t play in last night?s Seattle win over the Atlanta Hawks, with all three possibly being involved in deals.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is reporting that Murray and Potapenko could be Denver bound for guard Earl Watson, whose name has been included in rumors since the moment he signed a five year contract with the Nuggets this past offseason. Evans could be included in a separate deal.
Since both Evans and Murray are one year bird players, they have the right to veto any deal. Should they agree to a trade they lose their bird rights, meaning any team who acquires them that is over the cap will be limited to what they can offer contractually next season. This, however, doesn?t appear to be an issue for Evans who has already requested a trade.
Potapenko, who requested a trade two months ago, has accepted his fate.
"It's a business," he said. "I don't take anything personal. I understand that other teams may need me more than the Sonics. I have been traded before."
