McMillan A Winner In Return To Seattle

Jan 31, 2006 3:43 AM

Zach Randolph scored 32 points, and Nate McMillan was a winner in his return to Seattle as the Portland Trail Blazers beat the SuperSonics 116-111 on Monday night.

Returning to where he played and coached for 19 seasons, McMillan was greeted by a standing ovation before the game, then watched his team snap a four-game road losing streak. Portland had not won on the road since Dec. 26 at Sacramento.

Considered "Mr. Sonic," McMillan said he was eager to get through Monday's game.

While most fans applauded McMillan's return, there were a few boos and one fan behind the Blazers' bench who displayed a cardboard sign with "Mr. Sonic" crossed out and "TRAITOR" written below in black marker.

McMillan's contract expired with Seattle on July 1 and he agreed to a reported six-year, $30-million contract with the Blazers on July 6.

Evans Trade Talks Abound, Sources Say

Jan 28, 2006 9:37 AM

The Seattle SuperSonics are involved in numerous discussions around the NBA to trade power forward Reggie Evans, according to three sources.

Less than a week ago, Evans? agent, Dan Fegan, told The News Tribune he had approached Sonics general manager Rick Sund and asked that Evans be traded if there was no role for him with coach Bob Hill now in control.

In an attempt to appease Evans, sources say, Sund has been talking with several teams to try to get something in return for the 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward.

Sund declined to get into specifics, saying, ?I have always told the players I would keep any trade discussions about them confidential.?

One source said he thinks Evans will be dealt within a week; another indicated that nothing is likely to happen until it gets closer to the Feb. 23 trading deadline.

Either way, it seems clear that the career of the league?s best rebounder per minute is over in Seattle. Evans was the only healthy player not to get off the bench in the Sonics? loss to Dallas on Thursday night.

Two sources said Sund has been talking with Minnesota, where former Sonics associate head coach Dwane Casey has an eye on Evans. One source said a package could include Evans and Ronald Murray for newly acquired Marcus Banks, who came over in the trade that sent Wally Szczerbiak to Boston. However, another source said that trade is not likely to happen, even though the salaries match.

Ridnour Set To Return Tonight For Sonics

Jan 28, 2006 5:29 AM

Luke Ridnour will return tonight against New Jersey from a one-game absence because of a sprained left knee. Ridnour said he tweaked the knee late in the third period on Wednesday against Utah and it swelled considerably overnight.

He did not participate in the Sonics' non-contact practice Friday but did take shots and received treatment afterward. He declared himself ready to play and he can keep his little-used blazer in the closet.

"It was pretty disappointing," he said Friday at the Furtado Center. "But there was not much you can do at that point. I don't belong in those things (blazers)."

Celtics Interested In Flip Murray

Jan 24, 2006 11:11 AM

There is still nothing of substance to report on the Celtics? trade front, though sources last night did indicate the club might be looking at streaky Seattle scorer Ronald ?Flip? Murray, who?s in the final year of his contract.

It was hard, however, to overlook the fact that Mark Blount was the only player on either team not to get into the game. It was his second DNP in the last three.

Last week, Blount?s name popped up in several trade rumors, the most notable being a deal that would ship him to the Minnesota Timberwolves for fellow big man Michael Olowokandi.

Evans' Agent Requests Trade Out Of Seattle

Jan 23, 2006 11:31 AM

The agent for Seattle SuperSonics forward Reggie Evans has asked general manager Rick Sund to trade his client.

Dan Fegan, at Sunday?s game against Phoenix at US Airways Arena, said that since new Sonics coach Bob Hill does not want to play Evans, he recently approached Sund and asked that his client be dealt to a team that could better use his services.

?Reggie wants to stay in Seattle, he likes Seattle,? Fegan said. ?But clearly there is not a role for Reggie on this team. With that said, we would prefer the team trade him to a place that can better utilize his skills.?

Sund, on the trip with the team, confirmed that Fegan had made the request but declined to comment further.

Allen Unlikely To Be Olympian

Jan 23, 2006 5:53 AM

Ray Allen didn't say he would not play in the 2006 World Championships in Japan or the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but his comments about how Team USA czar Jerry Colangelo is assembling the team insinuated that he'll pass if extended an invitation.

Allen, who won a gold medal in the 2000 Games, hasn't given much thought to returning to international competition.

"I've tried to reserve my judgment," he said. "It's something that I would obviously love to do, play in the Olympics, but it's more than just saying yes to playing in the Olympics. There's more going into it."

Sonics And Suns Break Record For 3's In 152-149 Shootout

Jan 23, 2006 1:15 AM

It was an unofficial turn-back-the-clock night in Phoenix, to the days when everybody in the NBA loved to run and shoot, and nobody played much defense.

Ray Allen made a 30-footer at the second-overtime buzzer to break the NBA record for most combined 3-pointers in a game, giving the Seattle SuperSonics a 152-149 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night in the league's highest-scoring game in 11 years.

"When I was open, I just knew it was time to make a shot," Allen said.

The teams combined for 32 3-pointers, breaking the mark of 31 set by Toronto and Philadelphia on March 13, 2005. The 301 points were the most in a game since Dallas beat Houston 156-147 in two overtimes on April 11, 1995, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

It was the first 150-point game in the NBA since the Los Angeles Clippers beat Toronto 152-120 on March 15, 1998.

Allen scored 42, including 8-of-16 3s, and Luke Ridnour a career-high 30 as the Sonics snapped a four-game losing streak and handed Phoenix its first home loss in seven games. Thirty-two of Allen's points came after the third quarter.

"One thing about Ray Allen, at some point he's going to make shots," Sonics coach Bob Hill said.

Sonics Getting Calls On Reggie Evans

Jan 21, 2006 10:37 AM

The Sonics are indeed fielding trade calls on rebounding specialist Reggie Evans, according to NBA front-office sources, and there is no shortage of interest despite Evans' recent expulsion from Seattle's rotation by new coach Bob Hill.

Remember, though, that Evans -- like teammates Vladimir Radmanovic and Flip Murray -- signed a one-year tender for this season and thus has the authority to veto any deal.

The Sonics, furthermore, see Evans as one of their best trade assets, but his low salary ($1.1 million) makes it difficult to get anything meaningful in return.

Schrempf Added To Sonic Coaching Staff

Jan 20, 2006 10:45 PM

Former Seattle All-Star Detlef Schrempf was hired by the Sonics on Friday to fill a spot on new coach Bob Hill's staff.

Seattle was down an assistant after Hill was promoted to head coach following Bob Weiss' firing on Jan. 3. Schrempf will join Jack Sikma and Ralph Lewis on the bench.

Hill was considering Schrempf and Tom Newell for the position.

"He's familiar with the players, he understands my system because he played for me and I thought it made sense to give him half a season to see if this is what he wants to do," Hill said. "I feel confident that he can help."
