Iguodala Misses Exit Interview

Apr 28, 2011 10:45 PM

Andre Iguodala missed his exit interview with Sixers officials due to a previously scheduled doctor's appointment.

Sixers team president Rod Thorn confirmed that Iguodala did have an appointment, just across the street from where exit interviews are held, but that the team expected Iguodala to return for the exit interview.

"It's no big deal at all," Thorn said of the situation, adding that it was customary for players to have doctor's appointments at season's end. Asked if Iguodala was to be fined or if he was in trouble, Thorn said, "No."

"Obviously he played very well in the last game in particular," Thorn said. "Everything is fine with Iguodala."

Right Knee Chondromalacia Hindering Iguodala

Apr 27, 2011 10:29 AM

Andre Iguodala is playing hurt.

The chondromalacia in Iguodala's right knee, a chronic condition that dates back more than 5 years, flared in mid-March.

Had the Sixers been out of the playoff picture, Iguodala would have been shut down.

Instead, he played for the next month. The knee cost Iguodala only the last two games of the regular season, when Sixers management insisted he sit, general manager Ed Stafanski said.

"It hurts, because you can't really lift," Iguodala said. "You go into a jump shot and you feel like it's going to give at times. You feel a pinch. You don't know if the pain is going to come back. You're thinking about it every shot. Every plant. That's probably the toughest."

Collins Describes Game 4 As 'Human Nature' Test

Apr 23, 2011 4:48 AM

The 76ers are down 0-3 in their first round series against the Heat, but Doug Collins is attempting to rally his team in what he describes as a 'human nature' test.

"Are you going to let human nature take over when the game gets tough and say, 'We're down 0-3, how bad do you want to go back to Miami?' " Collins said.

Collins believes he knows how his players will respond.

"I just told our guys, 'Let's just give ourselves a chance to do everything we can and play a Game 5 in Miami,' " Collins said.

NBA Playoff Recaps For Thursday, 4/21/11 (In Which POR Refuses To Go Quietly)

Apr 22, 2011 4:52 AM

While the Pacers and 76ers are about to go quietly into the night, the Blazers won their Game 3 home game down 0-2 to stay in their first round series against the Mavericks.

Chicago Bulls 88, Indiana Pacers 84

While the Pacers very well may be swept, they have been able to adjust to Derrick Rose and may provide the beginnings of a blueprint on how to contain him over a seven-game series, using bigger, athletic defenders like Paul George who try to trap him. Rose scored 23 points, but was just 4-for-18 from the field, needing his 13-for-15 from the line.

With Rose struggling and Carlos Boozer completely incapable on offense, the Bulls were boosted by the likes of Luol Deng and Kyle Korver.

For the Pacers, they outscored Chicago by a 38-16 margin on points in the paint, but George, Tyler Hansbrough and Roy Hibbert combined to shoot 7-for-33 from the field.

Miami Heat 100, Philadelphia 76ers 94

Yielding second chance opportunities in high volumes to the Heat is an impossible proposition and that is exactly what happened in Game 3. Miami had 20 offensive rebounds, leading to 24 second chance points.

I still look at this matchup as being a bounce or two away from being a series, but this is the type of Heat team we were initially expecting, even if they still don’t have a competent point guard and play without one during the end of games as they did here with Joel Anthony and James Jones with the Big 3.

I’m not sure yet if the Game 4 result will say more about the 76ers or Heat.

Portland Trail Blazers 97, Dallas Mavericks 92

The Blazers were finally able to make their depth a difference, with Wesley Matthews scoring big early and then Brandon Roy and Nicolas Batum making key plays down the stretch.

Dallas received 25 points from Dirk Nowitzki and 29 from Jason Terry, but very little else from their supporting cast on a night where Tyson Chandler fouled out in 15 minutes.

While Portland’s 57.1% on 14 three-point attempts was terribly pivotal, you can also look to the +5 advantage on points in the paint, as well as Dallas shooting an uncharacteristic 13-for-23 from the line.

Spoelstra: LeBron Paying Closer Attention To Detail

Apr 20, 2011 7:49 PM

LeBron James’efforts in shutting down the 76ers' Andre Iguodala has a lot to do with the Heat comfortably ahead 2-0 entering Thursday's Game 3 of the best-of-7 series in Philadelphia.

"When you get to this time of the year, he really dials into the details," coach Erik Spoelstra said after Wednesday's practice. "He watches so much film on his own. I compare it to that of a staff member. … It's staggering, his attention to detail."

James' attention as the primary defender of Iguodala rendered the 76ers shooting guard a non-factor in the first two games. Iguodala scored four points on 2-of-7 shooting in the opener, then went 2-of-8 for five points in Game 2.

NBA Playoff Recaps For Mon. 4/18/11 (In Which CHI And MIA Double Their Postseason Wins From 2010)

Apr 19, 2011 5:33 AM

Compared to the Celtics and Magic, Chicago and Miami are the playoff newbies. They each had very different teams during the 2010 NBA Playoffs and have already won twice as many games as they did a year ago (each won one).

Miami Heat 94, Philadelphia 76ers 73

This was the kind of game where it is painfully clear who the better players are on both sides of the floor. Miami has multiple players who can create their own offense and convert at will, while the 76ers simply do not if they are unable to get out in transition.

LeBron James won’t win the regular season MVP and it is still just two games, but his chances for a Bill Russell MVP have never looked better and he is the baddest man on the planet.

Things look bleak for the 76ers because anyone giving them a chance at making this a series expected them to steal one on the road while Miami was still ‘figuring it out’.

Andre Iguodala is a very good defensive player and this matchup is a test of his limits, but nine points over two games is unacceptable. Evan Turner was Philadelphia’s best offensive player and that is not a good sign for them.

Chicago Bulls 96, Indiana Pacers 90

While the Pacers were able to force Derrick Rose into a lot of mid-range jumpers from the right side, he also was able to get to the rim efficiently and end up at the line for a 12-for-13 night there on his way to 36 points.

The Bulls had an eFG% deficit, posting a 41.6% compared to 45.5%, but they overcame that with an offensive rebound rate of 45.5. Nevertheless, they only had 14 second chance points compared to 15 for the Pacers on just nine offensive rebounds.

For Chicago to advance into the Eastern Conference Finals and beyond, they will need to win a lot of games like these where scoring is difficult. Luol Deng (2-for-10), Joakim Noah (2-for-10), Keith Bogans (1-for-5) and even Rose (11-for-25) struggled from the floor.

Roy Hibbert is down to two more tries to make his single-victory guarantee a reality.

Collins Content To Defend LeBron With Jrue Holiday During Crunch Time

Apr 18, 2011 2:59 PM

Dwyane Wade has become the Heat's go-to player in the clutch.

Sixers coach Doug Collins moved Andre Iguodala on Wade in the final minutes of Game 1 on Saturday, while putting guard Jrue Holiday on LeBron James to try to keep James on the perimeter and then have the Sixers big men rotate over in the event he got the ball and tried to drive to the rim.

Wade scored five of the Heat's final seven points, and the Sixers missed several opportunities to stay in the game.

Despite the 97-89 loss, the Sixers walked away thinking they had found their best defensive matchup.

"We felt that you need a quick guy in front of LeBron so that he's not handling it and attacking the rim," Elton Brand said Sunday after the Sixers had a two-hour practice at AmericanAirlines Arena. "In the post, you can double him more than outside, being that he's a bigger guy. With Jrue, he's a big on-the-ball defender. He can keep him out on the perimeter, and if LeBron goes to the post, we're there to help.

"As great a player as [James] is, he's not in the post getting the bulk of his points, so it's sort of unfamiliar to him. I'm sure he works on all aspects of his game, but that's not the strong suit of his game thus far."

Wade Probable For Game 2 Against Sixers

Apr 18, 2011 1:06 PM

Dwyane Wade participated in the morning shootaround and is expected to play in Monday night's first-round game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Wade missed Sunday's practice because of a migraine. He began experiencing symptoms during Saturday's Game One victory, but coach Erik Spoelstra said Wade did some "light shooting" on Monday and will likely be ready to go.

"He's feeling significantly better from (Sunday)," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Wade, who has been bothered by migraines since childhood, may wear protective goggles to shield his eyes from bright light during the game.

Wade Misses Practice With Migraine, Status Uncertain For Game 2

Apr 17, 2011 4:57 PM

Dwyane Wade did not practice Sunday because of symptoms of a migraine. His status for Game 2 of Miami's Eastern Confernece playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers is unknown.

"He had a headache yesterday that he played through the game with," coach Erik Spoelstra said, "so we're trying to be proactive with it as much as possible."

Wade missed a Jan. 22 home victory over the Toronto Raptors with a migraine, the second time in his eight-year NBA career he had missed a game because of the issue. He also experienced them during his collegiate career at Marquette.

"He's had 'em before," Spoelstra said, "so we'll have to see how he feels at the end of the day. We really want to be proactive right now and keep him rested and take medicine and we'll go from there."

Bosh Keys Miami's Game 1 Win Against 76ers

Apr 17, 2011 4:31 AM

Chris Bosh had 25 points and 12 rebounds in an excellent Game 1 performance while battling Thaddeus Young for a large part of the game.

“[Bosh] was good on the glass, was active and we were able to run some offense through him,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “All of us in general will be better and more efficient offensively as this series goes on.”

Said Young: “He’s definitely a tough guy, a 20-plus point scorer, an All-Star. It’s going to be tough going against him every night. He plays so well off the ball, and with LeBron and Wade, it’s going to be a battle every night.”

“It’s just one game of many. We’re expecting to make a long run this season,” said Bosh, who got 10 of his points in the opening half. Bosh, James and Wade combined for 31 points in the first 24 minutes and accounted for 63 of Miami’s 97 points overall.

“At the end of the day, it was just another game,” Bosh said. “We know what’s at stake, but we can’t put too much on this. I can’t because I just want to keep going out there doing what I’m doing.”

The Heat pulled out to a big lead in the third quarter, but Philadelphia made a comeback.

“We expect there to be close games each time,” Bosh said. “There is no room for complacency in the playoffs. That’s the way [Philadelphia] plays. They hit some big shots, about three threes. Lou Williams got it going and no lead is safe against that team. They are so fast and can score so quickly. We knew they were a dangerous team to play and we prepared for them the right way.”
