Sixers GM Stefanski Will Interview For Toronto Job

Jul 16, 2011 1:31 PM

Sources close to the situation confirmed that Philadelphia Sixers GM Ed Stefanski will interview for the same position in Toronto early next month.

Stefanski came to Philadelphia to be the president and GM in late 2007, but has worked just as the GM since Rod Thorn was brought in last summer. The duo had a similar arrangement in New Jersey earlier in the decade, when they built a team that went to two NBA Finals.

His tenure with the Sixers has been more tumultuous, with the team finding Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner in the draft but also signing Elton Brand on the down-side of his career.

Comcast Reaches Deal To Sell Sixers

Jul 14, 2011 10:10 AM

Comcast-Spectacor has finalized a deal to sell 76ers to a group of investors led by New York billionaire Joshua Harris. Both sides have agreed to terms and the deal is now in the hands of the NBA's Board of Governors, pending approval.

Sources have put the value of the deal at $280 million for a 90 percent share of the team. Comcast-Spectacor and owner Ed Snider will retain 10 percent of the team, but will not retain operational control. Also, the deal does not include the Wells Fargo Center, which currently houses the Sixers and the NHL's Flyers.

The Sixers will become a long-term tenant of the Wells Fargo Center, which should ease worries that Harris has any intention of moving the team. According to Comcast-Spectacor's press release: "The team will remain a long-term tenant of the Wells Fargo Center and will have a long-term cable broadcast agreement for its games with Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia."

Iguodala Expects To Stay With Sixers

Jul 11, 2011 9:53 AM

After Game 5 of the series against the Heat, Andre Iguodala responded to the question: “Do you expect to be a Sixer next year?” with “I expect to be in the NBA,” followed by a missed exit interview with his coach and front office brass and lots of trade talk on draft day. It seemed like Iguodala was on his way out.

But the seven-year Sixers’ veteran has arrived at a place where he believes the important thing is to not let anything affect him in a negative way.

“Whatever happens will happen, that’s why I made the statement I did right when the season was over,” Iguodala said. “I am just happy to be playing basketball in the NBA.  That’s my childhood dream and then it kind of got taken out of context but who wouldn’t want to be living that dream? I am living the dream so why worry about things I can’t control.
“I am just happy to be in this position that when the season starts back up to be on a roster. Where do I want to be? It would be great to be back with the young guys along with Elton Brand and I think we have room to pick up a free agent, so it will be an exciting next year.”

Trade rumors about Iguodala have become common place for the past couple years but he no longer believes that he is going to be moved.

“I can’t say I would be surprised, because I wouldn’t be surprised, but I am not expecting it to happen,” he said.

Darius Songaila Signs With Turkish Team

Jul 9, 2011 12:22 PM

Darius Songaila, who played with the Philadelphia 76ers last season, signed a 1-year $1.5 million deal with the Turkish team Galatasaray.

Unlike Deron Williams, the eight-year NBA veteran has a no-escape clause in his contract, meaning that he will not be able to return to the NBA this season if the lockout ends.

"Darius didn't play a lot of minutes last season in Philadelphia, and with the uncertainty surrounding the lockout, he wanted to make sure he'd play next season," Marc Bartelstein, his agent, told ESPN.com.

Argentina Working To Insure Ginobili, Scola, Nocioni, Delfino For FIBA Tournament

Jul 7, 2011 10:28 AM

The time is quickly approaching for Argentina’s national team players to launch their preparations for the FIBA Americas Championship in Mar Del Plata.

It remains to be seen if stars Luis Scola, Manu Ginobili, Andres Nocioni and Carlos Delfino will be among them because of the insurance quandary caused by the NBA lockout.

"This has to be resolved in 15 days time because all the teams will soon begin training,” Argentina Basketball Confederation president German Vaccaro said to FIBA.com.

“Argentina will start training on July 29.

“In our case, I’m optimistic that Argentina will have all of their players to play in the tournament we are hosting."

The cost of the insurance?

"We know it´s a lot of money, but we are not sure exactly,” Vaccaro said.

“What we have heard is that a player who has a three-year contract and is not one of the highest earners but an average one, if we had to insure him for the three years, we would be talking about 300,000 US dollars.

“So we are talking about an amount that would be unreachable for any federation.”

76ers Interested In Trading Speights

Jul 3, 2011 12:53 PM

When the NBA offseason begins following resolution of their collective bargaining agreement, the 76ers will be interested in trading Marreese Speights.

Speights hasn't meshed well within the style of Doug Collins.

If the team can trade Speights, they would like to use their free agent money to sign a solid, power big to start at center.

Spencer Hawes, who will be a restricted free agent, is considered a backup.
