May 2006 Utah Jazz Wiretap
The Utah Jazz signed center Jarron Collins on Thursday.
The club had announced last week that agreement had been reached.
The Salt Lake Tribune said it had learned that Collins, an unrestricted free agent, signed a three-year contract worth just over $7 million. He earned $1.7 million last season, it said.
Kevin O'Connor, vice president of basketball operations, called Collins "a true competitor who is passionate about basketball. He's a professional, on and off the court."
The Jazz have called a news conference for 2 p.m. today to announce the re-signing of big man Jarron Collins, an unrestricted free agent who earlier this month agreed to undisclosed terms on a new contract.
The Stanford product has spent his entire five-year NBA career in Utah, averaging 5.6 points and starting 185 of 302 regular-season games played.
Kevin O'Connor of the Utah Jazz said on Monday that he expects Derek Fisher to arrive in Utah "late this week" to take a physical that will complete a four-player trade with Golden State.
In exchange for Fisher, the Jazz sent Devin Brown, Keith McLeod and Andre Owens to the Warriors.
The Utah Jazz will retain center Jarron Collins, the Salt Lake Tribune is reporting.
The Jazz did not announce Collins' return, but it will become official in the next day or two, a source said.
A veteran center who was an unrestricted free agent, Collins averaged 5.3 points and 4.2 rebounds last season. Along with Rafael Araujo, he gives the Jazz experienced depth in their big-man rotation behind Mehmet Okur, Carlos Boozer and versatile Andrei Kirilenko.
"We definitely want him back and we're encouraged by the state of negotiations," Jazz owner Larry Miller said. "Jarron is very consistent, very steady.
Said coach Jerry Sloan: "He gives us stability. He's an executioner on offense - he knows what his assignment is - and he gives you all the effort in the world on defense. He won't quit."
Terms of Collins' new contract aren't known.
The Utah Jazz on Wednesday re-signed forward Matt Harpring and completed a trade for veteran guard Derek Fisher, hoping the added leadership can get the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2003.
Harpring was an unrestricted free agent until signing the four-year, $25 million deal he agreed to last week. He spent the last four seasons in Utah, where he signed as a free agent after playing for three teams in his first four seasons.
"I wouldn't have signed back if I didn't think we had a chance to win here and that's the biggest thing," Harpring said. "I really feel like we have a good thing going here. It's about winning now and that's why I wanted to come back."
The Golden State Warriors have acquired guards Devin Brown, Keith McLeod and Andre Owens from the Utah Jazz in exchange for guard Derek Fisher, it was announced today by Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin.
Former Razorback Ronnie Brewer has signed a contract and is officially a member of the NBA's Jazz, a team spokesman said Tuesday.
Brewer, chosen by the Jazz as the 14th overall pick in the NBA draft on June 28, signed a standard rookie contract with the team, according to Jazz spokesman Jonathan Rinehart. He said Brewer began practicing with the team on Monday.
Despite being traded to Toronto earlier this offseason, Robert Whaley was back with Utah on Monday when the Jazz opened Rocky Mountain Revue training camp in advance of Friday's start for the six-team summer league.
He has no guarantees and no promises he will make the roster, the Deseret News is reporting, and Whaley understands that.
"I'm just happy to be back," he said. "I'm ready to face any kind of obstacle that stands in front of me ? and this was another obstacle I've got to go through. I'm willing to come back and prove myself again."
"The only thing that kind of worries me is the part that really don't exist. Everyone says, 'Oh, he's got a bad past.' But I really don't see that past that everybody can see. You know, I've never been convicted. I never did nothing really wrong. Now, trouble do follow me. But, you know, I'm gonna prove myself as far as basketball goes."
Contracts are "in the works" for Utah's three draft choices, but they probably won't be signed until Monday morning, just prior to the Jazz's first practice before the Friday start of the Rocky Mountain Revue, the Deseret News is reporting.
First-round pick Ronnie Brewer of the University of Arkansas will be guaranteed at least two years with a third-year option, starting with at least $1,282,000 the first year and at least $1,378,100 for the second year, amounts dictated by his No. 14 selection in the draft.
Second-round picks Dee Brown of Illinois and Paul Millsap of Louisiana Tech will sign "make-good" contracts to participate in the Revue, and O'Connor said they wouldn't likely be offered contracts toward the 2006-07 season and training camp until some time after the Revue.
