Kanter Considering Offers From China

Jul 30, 2011 4:37 PM

Enes Kanter is considering playing professional ball in China next season if the NBA lockout persists.

Kanter's agent, Max Ergul, told The Salt Lake Tribune on Friday that his client has official offers from two Chinese teams.

Ergul does not want Kanter to miss another year of basketball, as he was forced to sit his freshman season at Kentucky.

"It's very interesting stuff," said Ergul, who said he could not reveal the names of the clubs because details of the negotiations are still confidential. "We'll be entertaining those ideas as well as the lockout progresses. He's a ballplayer — he has to play."

Kirilenko Negotiating With Russian Team

Jul 27, 2011 3:03 PM

Andrei Kirilenko is reportedly negotiating a deal to return to professional Russian team Spartak St. Petersburg.

Kirilenko's agent, Marc Fleisher, made no mention about his client signing with Spartak when contacted Wednesday.

Kirilenko, 30, began his pro career in St. Petersburg. He made his debut during 1996-97 as a 15-year-old, and was the youngest athlete to ever play in the Russian League.

While Kirilenko said several times last season that he would consider ending his career in Russia, he also stated a clear preference to remain in the NBA during the next few years.

Kirilenko To Play For Russian National Team

Jul 22, 2011 10:22 AM

Russia coach David Blatt confirmed to FIBA.com that NBA forward and EuroBasket 2007 MVP Andrei Kirilenko will be in Lithuania competing for the national team.

"He'll be with us 100% when we go to our first training camp outside Russia,” Blatt said, with Kirilenko having not featured for Russia since the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

“In less than a week he'll be joining us.

"The insurance issue is something that I do not handle but our federation is completely on top of it and has taken care of that.

“In Andrei's case, I believe it's already done.”

Jazz Avoid Layoffs Amid Lockout

Jul 19, 2011 10:24 AM

The Utah Jazz have not had any layoffs as a result of the league’s work stoppage, and there are none planned.

Part of the reason is the organization’s ties to the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies, which controls the Jazz, Triple-A Salt Lake Bees and Miller Motorsports Park, among other business entities. Many LHM employees work for multiple enterprises and hold interrelated job titles. By avoiding layoffs, LHM can keep other sports-related businesses running at full force and be prepared for the 2011-12 NBA season once the league resumes operations.

The lockout is expected to last several months, though, and could wipe out the entire season. If the latter occurs, the Jazz might be forced to re-evaluate their no-layoff stance as the work stoppage drags on.

Utah did not resort to significant layoffs during the 1998-99 lockout, which produced a shortened 50-game season.

Real Madrid Balks At Kirilenko's Salary Request

Jul 8, 2011 10:25 AM

According to Marca.com, Andrei Kirilenko recently approached Spanish League power Real Madrid about a contract, but the club balked over his $5.8 million salary request.

Kirilenko was paid $17.8 million last season, when injuries again limited his contribution to the Jazz. In 64 games, he averaged 11.7 points and 5.1 rebounds.

Kirilenko has said all along his No. 1 career choice would be re-signing with Utah.

Jazz In Good Shape To Adjust To Potential CBA Changes

Jul 3, 2011 12:49 PM

The Jazz are in good position to adjust to a new CBA climate if the NBA goes into a hard cap situation.

They have a good blend of mid-career veterans like Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap and Devin Harris, while also building around a stable of lottery picks in Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, Gordon Hayward and Alec Burks.

The Jazz have a payroll in the neighborhood of $62 million for 11-12 and $49 million in 12-13 before having a significant drop in payroll in 13-14.

"Those teams like the Jazz that have lined things up to expire and have flexibility gives you a much, much better chance to rebuild your roster in the new world," former Portland executive Tom Penn said.
