Pistons Coach Rick Carlisle had been after his team to start games with more fire. Well, the Pistons jumped all over the Cavaliers early Wednesday, bolting to a 27-16 lead.
"But unfortunately, our fast start put them into a small lineup and that caused us problems," Carlisle said.
  Did it ever.
The Cavaliers badgered the Pistons off their game with an unrelenting full-court press for the better part of three quarters.
"Our last game against them was just like that," Carlisle said. "They pressed us and we kept our turnovers down and we handled it well. Tonight, we struggled with it."
The press was at peak effectiveness in the third quarter, when the Cavs forced the Pistons into four turnovers and 7-for-21 shooting.
"I don't know why we didn't handle it better this time," said Damon Jones, who made three turnovers. "We weren't in our spots at times and they really pumped it up. They play hard. They have athletic guys who can jump, and they were able to get their hands on a lot of balls."
Once they got to the half-court, the Pistons were able to exploit the scrambling Cavs defense. Corliss Williamson had 16 points and a season-high 13 rebounds, and the Pistons converted 17 second-chance points.
