Frank Hughes of the Tacoma News Tribune is reporting that Brent Barry's agent, Arn Tellem, will seek a contract extension for the former slam dunk champion.

"It is not something I am thinking about now," Barry said, "but with one month left in the season, in the offseason, with one year left on my contract, if talks were initiated, I would be very interested in signing some sort of extension."

Hughes also reports that the Sonics will have trouble justifying an extension for Barry after the whole Gary Payton fiasco.

Barry understands the situation and is not making any demands, but would like some negotiations to begin.

"It is something I am sure that we will explore this summer," Barry said. "There are a lot of other pressing issues the Sonics have on their plate to not worry about me, especially (with me) being under contract for one more year. But if the talk came up and it was a situation that worked out best for where they wanted to go and that is fair to me, I would consider it."

Barry, who would be in a position to have a starting salary starting at more than $6 million dollars, understands he is a role player and would be willing to take less money for the benefit of the team.

"This team can make some great improvements to position themselves to be in contention in the next two to three years," Barry said. "To be one of those guys that hangs around to help the other guys would be kind of rewarding at this point in my career."
