Rik Smits hasn't worn an NBA uniform since the Indiana Pacers lost Game 6 of the NBA Finals to the Los Angeles Lakers on June 19, 2000. But he hasn't been forgotten.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak contacted Smits late in the regular season to ask if Smits wanted to join their roster for the playoffs.

Smits, 36, admits to giving it some thought.

Although the Lakers were eliminated in Game 6 of their series with San Antonio on Thursday night, it might have been a relatively easy way for him to get an NBA championship ring.

Smits, however, said no for the same reason he turned away from a briefly considered comeback attempt with the Pacers last fall: He doesn't think he's up to the physical challenge. He had surgeries on both feet, both knees, an elbow and an ankle during his 12-year career with the Pacers.

"I'm done," he said Thursday. "I'll leave it where it's at."
