David McDavid's "exclusive negotiating period" to buy the Hawks, Thrashers and Philips Arena operating rights from AOL Time Warner expires this weekend, with no deal finalized.

However, AOL said Saturday it still expects the deal to get done. McDavid and his representatives did not return calls Saturday.

"Everything is completely satisfactory," said Greg Hughes, a spokesman for Turner Broadcasting, the AOL Time Warner division that includes the teams. "It's a complex deal that requires a little more time."

What this means, at the least, is that McDavid won't be in charge of the teams in time for the NBA draft on June 26 and probably can't have NBA and NHL approval of an ownership change before sometime in July. It also suggests that there have been some rough patches in the extensive legal work required to navigate from letter of intent to final deal.
