An Eagle County judge Thursday ordered everyone directly connected with the Kobe Bryant case not to discuss it in public.

Judge Fred Gannett said his order is not a gag order, but a reminder to attorneys from both sides, court personnel, law enforcement officers and witnesses to refrain from releasing any information about the case.

"We're in the very preliminary stages of this case," Gannett said. "We felt it necessary to take a proactive stance."

Gannett said the order applies only to those associated with the court - attorneys, investigators, law enforcement and court personnel.

"We're received a fair amount of mail about the apparent proliferation of information regarding this case," Gannett said. "The court must have the authority to exert its control."

Gannett said his order is a reminder to those associated with the court in any way that they are governed by the rules of professional conduct.

"We want to make sure everyone has the best opportunity to present their case," he said.
