LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) The Orlando Magic are close to finalizing a deal to sign Paul Westhead as an assistant coach.

Westhead led the Los Angeles Lakers to the 1980 NBA title and coached high-scoring Loyola Marymount from 1985-90.

``We're finalizing the details of the contract,'' Magic spokesman Joel Glass said Thursday.

Westhead coached the Long Beach Jam of the American Basketball Association for one game this season.

The Magic fired coach Doc Rivers and assistant Dave Wohl in November after a 1-10 start and promoted assistant Johnny Davis to the head coaching position. The Magic are 1-14 heading into Friday's game against Toronto.

Westhead has also coached NBA teams in Chicago and Denver, plus La Salle and George Mason. He also spent two seasons in the Japan Basketball League.
